I have a Bernette 80 sewing machine and am having trouble sewing through thick material. For example, I tried to make a narrow hem to finish a slit on a light-weight denim dress. The material just would not feed when I tried sewing through the 3 layers of material. I was also unable to make buttonholes in a lightweight denim jacket. I thought this was a decent machine - am I doing something wrong? Does anyone have any tips? :nc:

Try a larger sharper needle. If you are using a Universal, try a sharp.

You may need to use a denim needle (Schmetz size 16 or 18).
Check for lint around your feed dogs also and maybe a drop of oil on the bobbin case would help. Let us know if changing needle size did it for you. Happy Stitching!

A longer stitch length helps me. Sometimes I lengthen the stitch just to go over a seam.
