When my mom became severely will Parkinsons' eight years ago, we rented our home and moved into her large rambling ranch style home to live because it was bigger. We built her a 20 x 20 suite with special doors, ramps, handicapped bath, etc. and my girls shared a room. My son got what used to be the nursery (for me) and my husband and I took the smallest bedroom. When she died, my husband and I took her suite and my son took the smallest bedroom bedroom. We have been converting a large portion of the three car garage that was supposed to be Dad's shop but was never finished (after 44 years) it is now two rooms, a 6x14.5 (small) bedroom for the baby and a 21x14.5 bedroom for my daughter. They moved into that area about three weeks ago. When she marries and moves out it will become an office and a hobby/play room for the family. Anyway, with the shift of the other kids, I have inherited the smallest bedroom for my SEWING ROOM!!! I'm so excited! I'm having trouble convincing my husband to move the pattern filing cabinet (from a Joann's that went out of business) to the walk-in closet...he has lots of reasons, but the real one is that it weighs a million pounds (at least) and he doesn't want to negociate steps with it. It has taken some maneuvering to make the space work. I had an L-unit and cabinet for my serger and older sewing machine and a six foot quilt table for my 200E that opens up with gate legs at the back and a matching corner computer table to go between the two tables that makes the unit 8 feet long. I've had to move the computer table to the other side because the room is only 8' 6" and to open the quilt table I have to have it in the middle of the room. I just have to have longer cables (or can move the laptop when I work). I'm still in the process, but it looks like my 6' cutting table will fit, as will the wardrobe with mirror where I keep my supplies and another small cabinet. I have lots of space for storage on shelves in the walk-in. The room was full of ungrounded plugs (so serge arresters would not work) so we added grounded power strips on the OUTSIDE of the walls, now I have long power strips down one whole side of the room! I should be able to bring in my dress forms and a chevil mirror. Outside the room is the only hall in the house...about 3 1/2 feet square with three doors...the first thing I did when I moved in was put a mirror on each door so I have three way mirrors outside the sewing room. Across the hall is the kitchen and next to it is the den where the family spends most of the time (with our parrots). The third door leads to the basement, PIRLEGAL would like that...easier to get her good machine below ground for tornados! It is like a dream! Now I need to decided if I want to go back into the sewing business again since a have a real dedicated space to do it. pam

It's just sooo exciting! I know that every seamstress dreams of a room of their own. I, for one, never thought that we'd have the space to do it. When I was sewing for a living, all the equipment in this room, except my quilt table, corner and 200E shared a portion of the "family room"...we were sooo crowded...and even then, I had an inexpensive desk (in place of the quilting table) with my Pfaff on it, with its computer on a desk next to it. One Sunday after church, eight members of a wedding party came over to my small house to try on their dresses for final fitting....with my family of five, and equipment, and their parents/boyfriends, etc, it was really crowded. My husband plans to take pics, so I'll post when he gets them done.
