Bear with me here but why can't you use the same fabric for the facing as the actual garmet?.Takes care of the weight problem and it would match a floral or other print wouldn't it? Seems like I have seen this done on ready made clothes. But then again, I have no clue. LOL

Are you confusing facing and interfacing maybe.. I almost always use same fabric for facings.. Unless its a sheer print and then it looks kinda stupid.., so I use solid color same as background color of the print.. Now interfacing is a different animal altogether..It gives body to the front of the jacket and is concealed under the facings..:bg:

The only time I don't use the same fabric for facing is if I am looking for a specific look...like a denium dress trimmed in red, with red print facings. The interfacing though needs to be matched to the weight, make up and needs of the garment and needs to be something else entirely.

Lea,
Interfacing is a stabilizer (like Pellon) to give shape to the garment. It goes between the facing and garment and comes in either fusible or sew-in. I prefer to use Fusi-Knit on most of my garments as it gives the right amount of body plus it is not too bulky. Unless, I'm working on a specific design detail, my facings are always of the same fabric as my garment and I include the interfacing. Is this clear as mud??? :bg: Happy Stitching!

HeHeHe, told ya I didn't have a clue. This is my first attempt at clothing & no one to help me in person. This entire site with it's wealth of information and all the helpful members have been a life saver. Keeps me from becoming discouraged. I think I'll go to the library today & see what kind of sewing books are available. I also have a goal for myself this summer: to teach myself how to sew skirts, dresses & vests & jackets that I can wear to church.
thanks again,

We all had to learn. Don't worry about it! You'll be sewing like a champ in no time! When I was in home ec, we started with skirts and then a matching blouse....I wouldn't invest a lot in my first fabric...just in case. If I were teaching home ec, I'd probably start with a vest (with or without buttons), then a skirt and then a blouse. I would not start with anything knit until I thought I was ready. I always thought that a blouse was a hard thing to start on...but it teaches you soooo much! Good luck in your sewing adventures!
