Hey everyone, I didn't want Mary's broadwidth to go crazy so I made a new post on getting healthy. I had to share with all of you that I've lost a slow, 11.6 pounds in four weeks. I feel better definately. My grandkids are all wanting to do it with me. I have two of them that are very over weight. One 50 pounds and one 30 pounds so they are joining me. :bg: :bg: :bg: Ouuuu I feel so much better.

Uh oh......I finally got weighed at a routine medical and I am 8 pounds heavier than I thought!I haven't worked for the last seven weeks and have not been as active as normal, and eating because I have been so bored. I have cut right back on what I am eating now. I have just spent 2 hours gardening, so that is my exercise for today. I really need to try harder now.

Susie - well done! you are doing great. And Bren - you too are doing well. Tell me , then, what are you doing? It is obviously working. Tell me, tell me!!

Great job ladies!

I too am finally starting to feel the difference. My weight loss has been VERY slow because I am not very good at sticking to the diet. I am close to breaking through the next weight range (160 lb.) right now it is fairly easy because I am working and therefore on a reliable schedule. Come summer, when I am laid off, it will be interesting to see if I can maintain the healthy eating habits that I have started. At least my exercise usually improves!

Keep up the good work and keep sharing those tips - I am learning so much!

Hey, what happened to Part I? I just started reading the thread yesterday and got interested in all the different sites posted and recipes and I come back today and I can't find that thread. You've all got me almost ready to jump in and try loosing a few pounds. Actually I'd like to drop about 50 but 10 would be a nice start.

Hey sewinggrandma,

I'm sorry about the new thread, but Mary said we needed a new thread because that one was getting too long so I started part two so I could post my weight loss. I should have told Bren to do it because she is the one who posted this thread in the first place. Sorry about that.

Susie, I understand about starting another thread for Healthy eating. I'm just wondering what happened to Part I of Healthy eating? I was reading it yesterday morning getting excited about all the good things coming from it, then this am I looked because I hadn't finished reading all of it and I can't find it. Yesterday Part I and Part II both were here, today only Part II.

When we move I wont have to do that. I am so glad this thread was started again. It is important that we stick together on this idea.

Mary, are we going to have to change anything like the address to this site in our favorites when you swap over? Don't lose us. :bg:

Well Ladies it's getting harder and harder to stick to the foods I can eat. There is so many temptations here in New Orleans it's hard to stick to any diet. I've been keeping my hands busy, (Jan's advice), with crocheting. It's also hard because I'm trying to take it off and my husband who doesn't have a weight problem yet!!!! is trying to quit smoking and he's eating all the junk I use to. It's important for him to NOT smoke so I really don't want to take the junk away from him right now until he feels confident with not smoking. He couldn't work today with the rain so he woke me up with, "Go get dressed and I'll take you to breakfast." Nice, but Not nice. There is very little at the restaurant we go to for breakfast that I can have. So I made him pancakes and I made my 1 point toast and we were both happy. Over the weekend I used up my flex points at a restaurant we both love and I had their specialty, fried catfish and coleslaw. The fish alone was 19.5 points. LOL But it was worth every bite. WW works I've lost 13 pounds in 5 weeks and I'm not starved and can have plenty of foods just not a lot of the fried battered type things New Orleans is famous for. There is a joke around N.O. saying we have fried batter on all the menus here. Not far from the truth. But ooooough so good.

This may not work for everyone but it did me. Every time I looked at fatty, fried, over processed food I pictured liquid fat flowing thru my veins instead of healthy red blood. The image made me turn down the impulse to eat the food and pretty soon the thought of eating it made me gag. Same with sugary sweet stuff. Can't stand either one now. The mind is a powerful weapon - use it wisely!

That wouldn't work for me. We're from south Louisiana we EAT Crayfish (aka mud bugs) for goodness sake, Watching grease bubble in the pan only means the shrimp, fish, oysters, ect are about to be cooked. LOL :bluewink: I need a bigger deterant than that. Thanks Mama anyway.

I'm joining the diet craze.
My husband's doctor told him if he didn't go on the South
Beach Diet he would become a diabetic. After watching his father have both legs cut off, loose his sight and eventually die due to the disease my husband announced he's going on the diet.
Well, it sure won't hurt me to join him so here we go.
We'll be fine -- it looks almost painless -- after the first two weeks. Losing the fruit, the breads and my glass of wine is going to hurt. But after two weeks we can have them back -- just in modified form.
It does make sense. After two weeks you just eat non-fat and low sugar.

Energetic amounts of plumbing, tiling and decorating have moved me from 62.9kilos to 61kilos- which is about 4 lbs! And we have a new bathroom!I am planning to do the 'race for life' which is run in Englans at the beginning of July. I think it is about 5kilometres and is run by women for breast cancer research. I need to get training, Nag me please! I shall be walking it at this rate - we have a team of ladies going from my church and my husband said he would come to cheer me on. Until he learnt that I might not make running it but walk it!

Jan, get your skinny butt moving. :bluewink:

Ladies, whatever it takes to stay healthy is fine. I always tell my husband that deep fried is "boiled in oil" and it doesn't deter him either.

It totally turns me off, I never could eat deep fried. Sweets are my downfall, and bread and potatoes and......

Yeah Jan, Just remember it's for the Hooters!!!! You can do it. Start working up to a pace you can deal with and before you know it you will be fast walking. LOL

Mary,

My trouble is I like the potatos and sweets in addition to my deep fried food. I know it's not healthy for me to eat all that oil but that's what I was custom to so it's second nature to eat fried foods. I don't have high cholestrol so that' in my favor and I don't have diabetes so that's another thing in my favor I'm just over weight by about 48 pounds and I'm doing something about that now.

I read in this mornings paper that they are having a conference here in New Orleans this week about obesity. They are finding out that obese people are lacking a ppy hormone that tells your body to quit eating. People who eat constantly lack this hormone and it's the hormone that curbs you cravings for food. The articial also says people who have had the stomach reduction surgery has built up the hormone again in their bodies. very interesting articial. It will be online in the morning so I'll send you the link when it comes up on my newspaper's website for those interested in reading it for theirselves.

"We found that PYY levels were very high after the meal in patients who had undergone gastric bypass surgery. Since PYY is known to reduce hunger, we believe that the surge of PYY in the bypass patients is responsible for the person's loss of the desire to eat excessively," explains Dr. Aylwin.
You wonder if the lack of PYY is instigated by excessive eating - much as if you drink a lot your body learns how to metabolise alcohol more quickly such that it takes more to get drunk. The reasons for obesity are so complex and many of them come down to comfort eating rather than a hormonal problem. There are very few who have a hormonal problem in reality. we recently had a case in the news here of a couple who were finally cleared of child abuse because their daughter died ( she was very young - under10 I think) of obesity issues. They were eventually cleared because it was proved that she was one of the few people who do not have an 'off' switch for hunger and ate continually.

On another note - I ran 1/2 mile this morning and felt quite nauseous! Difficult running with a gammy knee and asthma - but I will keep going - I haven't got long to get my distance up!

Susie, what is a hooter? To me they were the unfortunate dull children in class who sat at the back and hooted doing rafia work!

Jan it depends who you are defining the Hooter to. If you are telling an adult it's a boob, if it's a child, which I just had this same things with my Grandson today as a matter of fact. He told me that Hooters was a X rated place to eat, which it is a restaurant here in the states, named for women wearing skimpy tops with their hooters sticking out on top waiting tables, but it's actually a good place to eat and kids eat there all the time. It just sounds like an X rated place because of it's name. But Hooters are Boobs. (Headlights!!!!) ROFLMAO

Good for you Susie!!
I lost almost 10 pounds in the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet. That's seven the first week, which is the average I guess.
Those first two weeks are a lot like the Atkins -- almost no carbs or sugar -- and low fat too. It was hard on my system. It didn't bother my husband though.
Now it's low carb -- brown rice instead of white, whole wheat breads and pasta -- and low fat. That just takes some modification in the way I cook.
So Susie, I'm right on your heels.

I haven't been doing too good over here. Doc doubled my meds which makes me don't give a hoot about anything and that includes the size of my derrière. One thing at a time; at least now I'm smiling. Got another kitty 2 weeks ago. He's soooooooooo cute. Named him Sunshine.

Jan,

I should think it's the participation more than the performance that's important. Whether you run, walk or skip, it's the cameraderie and support of an important health concern of women (and men), globally, that's the issue.

Isn't it unfortnate that in industrial societies we have such a health crises now as obesity? We no longer work the land to burn calories or walk to places we need to go and we've become intent on basically sitting at computers and not moving much, other than to take a break every so often for food or necessary body activities.

I have 2 large dogs that I was convinced would get me out of the house for daily walks. Never happened. After going off to work every day of the week, when the weekend comes, I would kind of like to enjoy the home I've paid for, decorated, invested time in. I guess I just feel so unmotivated. I'd love to get in shape but after hurting my back last month from pulling weeds, I've become more cautious. No fun.

I've managed to cycle 12K one day, power walk 2 miles and am still cycling a couple of miles a day to get my stamina up! It'll be fun, we are walking/running over our local heathland, which has a golf course, a racecouse and a neolithic grave. Ah England , my England!

I drank a lot of water, and no, it is not my excercise of choice! Though I did beat some of the local running club and they want to see me next week! Personally I prefer dancing/aerobics or bike riding. Or being poked in the eye with a long pointed needle.
Since then I have also drunk beer, tea, wine and coffee in that order. See my healthy lifestyle!

When I need to lose a few pounds (okay, 20+), I drink herb tea. Usually Chamomile. With milk. And some sugar. I'm not a tea lover but I have actually skipped meals because the hunger pangs didn't come on so often.

DorothyL,

Your poor father-in-law. And your husband must have witnessed some horribly scary things that happened to his dad. My heart just breaks for them both. What a sad childhood for them both.

Diabetes is talked about more and there is just more research and coverage of studies now than there ever was when I was a youngster. I had never heard of this disease until my late 30s. My friend was taking meds for a year after her diagnosis. Came to find out, a year later, that she never did have the disease and they had been treating her with meds that she never needed.

I think there is a lot of prejudice against heavier people in general but I would hate to think that because she was heavy, they would just assume. Don't they take blood tests or some-
thing to determine that?

My oldest daughter was just told she is showing signs of diabetes(DM). Her doc put her on the South Beach Diet. I hope she sticks with it. She always maintained her weight as a teen and young adult, then came the babies. First one was 10 1/2 #, second just under 10#. Studies have shown that women who have large babies do develop DM. All of mine were over 10# and so far so good. My oldest 2 brothers have also developed DM, one is on meds the other is diet controlled. A niece would get gestational DM and get very sick with it, had normal sized babies but has since gone on to full blown DM where she has to take insulin. Prior to this no one in my family, down to great grand parents had never been diagnosed with DM. There are blood test out there, one can monitor over an extended period how your blood sugar is doing with just one blood draw. Then there are the glucose tolerence tests where you have to drink super sweet liquid then give urine and blood at calculated times over 1-6 hours.

Spoke to DD last evening. Has lost 15# in 3 weeks. Says she can run up the stairs and not be out of breathe. Has lots of energy, and the diet isn't hard for her to follow. Did say the first week was a little rough but got thru it.

Thanks Mary,

I'm starting to get wings under my arms I'm going to have to try and get some exercise to tone them. All my old clothes are really baggy on me some are almost falling off at the waist. My Body Double is turned all the way to as far as I can close the gap. I guess I'll have to get me a smaller one. Rats!!!! I got that one on sale. It really makes me feel good to see my clothes hanging on the double, I can see how much I've lost. Althougth I'm going to turn into a chicken my hubby told me because I've eaten a lot of it lately. I'm sure glad I love chicken. ROFL You ladies have sure gave me alot of encouragement and I thank you. You're great.

Yeaaaaahhhhh I've lost 31 pounds and I am now doing water aerobics 4 days a week for an hour each day. I am starting to pull some of the flab tight again. Oh boy do I feel great. My hubby now calls me "Slim" although I'm far from being thin, it feels good. I would highly recommend Weight Watchers to any one who wants to lose weight because it's a balanced way of eating and not really a diet at all. There is almost nothing off limits to eat, just portion control. I eat ice cream, low fat of course, every now and then I eat birthday cake, I have fried fish once a week which I love, and I still can have my shrimp pasta and all the cajun things I like I just can't have it everyday. This program I can stay on.

By the way Mary, I love the new boards.

Suzie --
I'm at 23 pounds now and I fit in the back seat of the Mini Cooper!!
I'm on South Beach and it,too, is something we (hubby too) can live with.
We went to the state fair yesterday though and I was kinda bad.
My daughter has the best diet plan. She lost 60 some pounds on it. She made it up herself and here's her advise.
"Every time you look at something and say 'I really shouldn't eat this,' Don't!"

Dorothy,

That is so great. You are right up there with me. Go Girl!!!! we have to keep pumping each other up so we can succeed at this life long struggle. About your daughter, I say whatever works do it. I too talk myself out of things I know I shouldn't eat and it works well. On WW you can eat just about anything just a little, portion control is the key. That way you don't fell like you're dieting.

Thanks Mary, Forgive yourself and get them 5 back off. LOL That's hard for me to do is forgive myself when I mess up. It just makes me think, "Heck, I messed up why not just keep on eating." I'm bad. Nahhhh I'm coming to a place where I'm staying the same and not losing but they told me that would happen so I gotta keep on following it. I don't want to go back up again. :nervous:

oh well, Mary - it's happened to me too over the summer - too much wine and song ( not really interested in the women..) Still I'm back to work tomorrow and back to my old eating habits. I've just had the "eyeball headaches" I used to get diagnosed as migraine and so I have a list of food I have to steer clear from -most of it yummy: red wine, cheese, doritos, crisps, chocolate, fish and chips, chinese takeaway(ie anything with MSG) that ought to sort me out.
Mind you I don't eat chocolate, rarely eat cheese, can substitute beer for wine and I like ready salted crisps which don't have MSG so perhaps nothing will happen. What I need to do is get more active.

Susie, I'm so proud of you, your doing great. As for as that flab under your arms, those are called " Angel Wings " see your turning into an angel. My sister in-law calls them Bat Wings. NO WAY !! I have some coming on now from all the surgery on my teeth & not being able to chew. Now that isn't a diet I'd recommend at all. If anyone knows how to get rid of angel wings please let me know. It's one of the hardest things to get rid of. Theresa

Hey Theresa, I hope you are okay down there with all those hurricanes coming your way.

I found a way to firm up those wings and it works. I go to water aerobic 4 times a week for one hour. They use those water dumb bells (I think that's what they call them) they are light but just try and push one under the water........ it hurts. LOL But it firms up those "ANGEL WINGS" I aquired while losing my weight. I feel stronger in my arm since I've been working out. Keep us informed about those Hurricanes.

For those of you on the South Beach Diet, did you keep the online journal?
It sounds as if the first two weeks are difficult. No bread or potato, I have had potato with my evening meal since I was big enough to sit up at the table.

I know the South Beach diet and the Atkins diet is all the rage right now but I couldn't live on a diet like that for a long period of time. My problem is I need some structure to what I can eat and stay eating for a long time. Weight Watchers for me means I can have anything I want I just have to account for it and when my daily allowance is eaten then I have to wait until tomorrow to eat again. You can eat a lot and it's balanced. They had a program on our news the other day that stated that your brain needs at least 100 mg of carb a day to function properly. My brains are messed up enough as it is I don't need something else fooling around with those cells.

Susie, Maybe you can get me going concerning the " angel wings ". I have the pool, the exercises to do & some water stuff for the exercises. No dumb bells for the water but know where I can get some. Guess I'd better get my rear in gear, huh? Better wait until this hurricane passes first though. We're prepared for it. Know we'll get lots of wind & rain at least. Shutters are up but need to get the rest of the outdoor stuff in & statues down. The pool is the only way I can exercise. Dry land kind kills my body. I need a buddy as I feel foolish out there alone. Thank heavens it's private out there. On second thought, maybe if someone would see me they'd get a good laugh. I used to have the wrist weights & had the bright idea to put them on my ankles & walk in the water. WRONG!!! They turned me upside down real fast & I thought I'd drown before I got one off. Never tried that again. Now there's your laugh for the day. Theresa

ROFL I am laughing, because I use to fuss at the grandkids for doing the same thing with the kiddy floaties. The big kids would put them on their ankles and didn't relize how dangerous that was. The exercises that we do are real easy to do in water. I wouldn't be able to do them if not. But my arms are really starting to get firm so I'm really happy with that. I still have a long way to go until I'm satisfied with myself but I'm on my way.

Get you some of those dumbbells and hold them straight out with your shoulders under the water and your arms extended across the top of the water to your side. Then pull your arms down to your thighs and then back up again. Do that 20 times. Talk about feeling it pulling. Then extend your arms out in front of you and play like you have a tray in front of you, push the tray under to your thighs and then turn your palms up and pull up the tray. You can also push your arms straight back under the water as far back as you can go and hold it to the count of 10. Those are just a few. My toes are raw from doing the aerobic on the pool floor. I'm going to get me some water shoes this weekend.

Good luck with the storm. It looks like it's going to be a bad one. Let us know when it's over that you're okay. I'll be looking for your email. Take care.

South Beach diet isn't the same as Atkins -- just for the first two weeks or if you screw up a lot and need a jump start to get the sugar out of your system.
After the first two weeks you just eat, but you watch the fat, carbs and sugar. Low fat means more chicken and fish and lean cuts of meat. Carbs come from whole grain and brown rice, not processed grains. And well -- sugar is sugar is sugar.
We chose this diet because it is very unstructured. I can adapt most of my recipes to fit.
And you don't count anything.
But I do miss potatoes with butter on them.

Byt the end of two weeks you'll be so glad to eating phase 2 you won't even feel like it's a diet, Mary.
I did well (not great)even eating out all weekend. And when it gets really, really bad -- cheat.
Try some canned black beans with cummin and garlic as a side dish. If you boil yams til they are almost done then cool them and cut them in wedges they can be grilled and substitute for potatoes. Or you can mash them.
We found lots of protein helps make up for the lack of carbs. It's the side dishes that are tough.
You can eat three meals and snacks in between -- the problem is figuring out what you can eat!!
After two weeks of no carbs I wonder how the Atkins people can live that way for extended periods of time.
Get yourself some whole wheat pasta and brown rice for when you go to phase two. You'll be glad you have it. Then remember to eat a few carbs on the side not as the main part of the meal.

I got sick of eggs too. Canadian bacon and turkey bacon not big fatty slices, Mary. You'll get through it. But if you give up, don't give up all together. After the first two weeks it's not bad at all.
You'll make it.
Drink lots of water.

Mary, Just take one day at a time. I usually think how can I keep doing this day after day, the exercise is the part that is hard on me, but I keep thinking I can do this today, then tomorrow I say it wasn't so bad and I made it through, I'll try it again today. Each day gets a little bit easier. I am not a water drinker. I'm not a drinker of any kind of beverage but I find that if I drink the crystal light or the decaf diet coke I can drink more than if I just drank water. By drinking those things they tell me at weight watchers it's just like drinking water.

I'm at a stand still with my weight loss and I'm not cheating. I only lost .6 pounds this week and it get discouraging to try so hard and only lose ounces but I won't give up. 32.6 pounds is a lot of weight so I'm happy right now just knowing I've come so far in 19 weeks

Susie -- Isn't 6 pounds in a week a lot to lose? If I did that I'd be concerned something else (bad) is going on with your health. Or you have sped up your metabolism to the point it can't be sustained and you will gain it back faster than you lost it.
I've been there and done that.
I'd heard seven pounds the first week and about 2 a week after that for healthy weight loss.
Of course this is from the woman who didn't ride her bike this morning because the cat pooped in there and after I cleaned it up I'd lost the mood!Dorothy

One way to get rid of the weight-loss plateau is to change your workout. For instance, if you've been doing slow, steady jogs every day, try one or two interval training sessions a week. That's where you do a brief warm-up, then alternate periods of fast running with slow jogging or walking. A sample interval routine includes a five-minute warm-up at an easy pace, two minutes at a more intense pace, and one minute at an easy recovery pace. Repeat these 2-minute, 1-minute cycles 5-8 times and finish up with an easy cool-down and a stretch.

Muscle does weigh slightly more than fat. Muscle is a denser tissue and takes up less space than an equal weight of fat. That's why it's possible to lose inches but show no changes in weight on the scales. Having more muscle means you have a more desirable body composition, or fat-to-muscle ratio. Your weight may not change, but your body will look different, smaller, firmer and tighter. Though it may take you a few weeks to see measurable changes, you begin to put on muscle and burn calories from the moment you start exercising.

Be extra careful with your diet, sometimes portions sizes can creep up without you realising.

Keep going Susie, you can break the plateau!
Mary, I'm amazed - I couldn't do what you are doing! Are you seeing much difference?

Susie, don't get discouraged. You have reached a plateau and will stay there for a bit now. Some people reach theirs and can't budge for months. Just don't stop.

I am drinking a lot of water, in fact, I have to remember to stop in the afternoon or I am up in the middle of the night. I can't really see any difference but I know my kidneys wish I would give it up for a while.

I just keep thinking about how much better I am going to look. New clothes, etc. for myself as a reward.

This is day 8 so I am half way there. No cheating YET.
