Hi all; I am looking to make a classic suit, consisting of a straight skirt (fitted at the waist and hips) and a jacket (simple straight lines, not necessarily fitted). My skill level is beginner advancing towards intermdiate. Can anybody recommend a specific pattern for me to buy? What is your favorite classic suit pattern out there? Or should I just search for the skirt & jacket pattern as separates? Thank you! Heather

The first place I would look for a classic suit pattern would be in the Vogue catalog. Patsy Patsy

Check out patterns by Loes Hinse or Textile Studio. They are separates but easy to read instructions and give a tailored look without all of the fuss. David Warren's patterns in the Butterick catalog are also great classic looks. I like his new pattern #3917 which is for average skills. It has an updated look with classic princess lines which flatter most any figure type. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

Thank you, all, I have been looking and still haven't found the right look! So I will probably find separates that work together. On top of it all I am dead inbetween the big 4's three size packages, between a 12 and a 14!! Match that with very little measurment variation between my waist and hips for the bottoms, and a c cup at the top and I am finding that I have to alter everything!! Needless to say, I have "Fit for Real People" on order, I hope it helps me with alterations. Once I get a little experience under my belt I will looking into drafting programs to design my own clothing. I am going to try for a fitted skirt Vogue 7333 (a Today's Fit pattern) and find a basic jacket to go with it. On another quest, does anybody know of a good sleeveless shell or tank top pattern for a C cup? I have made two so far and the armholes and neck just don't fit right, what a pain! They are baggy and long. I am a petite size, and am learning that just shortening the length doesn't quite do the trick. Heather

Heather - use your above bust measurement to get the shoulders to fit. Split the pattern at the bust to increase for the additional fullness like a side hinge. Check out the fitting book from the library until the one you ordered arrives. Lengthen the side seam under the arm so there is no gaposis. Sounds as if your shoulders are not fitted properly which is throwing the line of the pattern off. I like the Textile Studio Santa Monica Tee for a well fitted T-shirt. You can make it in a variety of styles. I also like the Monaco shell by Loes Hinse. Ver easy to make up without darts but one uses a stretch lycra type fabric. Fits all shapes and sizes. I love the funnel neckline as it looks great under suits or with shorts. Go to www.loeshinse.com to see her selection of patterns. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

Thanks, Marty; Not only will I need to buy patterns by my upper bust size, but I will to alter the pattern as well. I have learned so much here! I found a wonderful article here that I wish I had discovered before, about a full bust alteration for C cups and larger, the illustrations make it crystal clear for a newbie like me: http://www.sew-whats-new.com/petite-plus/article3/ I am sure I will have this alteration by heart soon!
