I am reading instructions in one of my patterns and it tells about "ripping" the fabric to make sure it is on grain. I am using Silk Essence from JoAnn's for this project. It is a top my mom is wearing to a wedding and I want to make sure it is right.

So when I try to rip it, I have material right sides together lengthwise. I am suppose to clip into the selvage on the lengthwise edge, am I cutting into both layers of fabric or just one? I also know that if it won't rip then I pull a thread and cut along that thread, am I correct on that?

I want to get this layed out tonight but I can tell as I am progressing with my skills, I want to learn even more about the correct way to do things.

Thanks for the help.

Just cut one selvage edge and tear across to the next selvage edge.
