I'm copying a skirt that has no waistband - just a zipper and facing. First attempt at attaching facing to zipper opening was messy. Any hints? Thanx!

It really should look no different than where you have attached a zipper to the neck opening/zipper. Because of the amount of weight and stress at the waist, be sure and use a good interfacing that matches the weight and type of your fabric.

Thanks Pam for your reply. I should have been clearer - I've never put a zipper in with a facing! I generally sew home decor items, and just decided to copy a favourite skirt- no pattern! The sample skirt has the facing sewn onto the zipper itself - not through the skirt, and it is very neat at the top edge. Question: Should I begin sewing at the zippered opening along the top edge of skirt and then turn facing to inside and top stitch the narrow end of the facing to the zipper ? Hopefully this makes sense .. if not could you give it a whirl describing the steps? Thanks ever so much, Karen

If you use an invisible zipper, the facing can be applied in a seam (easily). Once the zipper has been inserted, you just sandwich the zipper between the facing and the garment and sew the facing in place. You could do the same basic thing with a regular zipper but the zipper teeth would show (which is sometimes an effect that you might want). You could apply the facing to the garment and then apply the zipper but the lap will be in the garment and in the facing. To do that, I would probably apply the facing and then baste the zipper into the garment to guarantee the correct placement. Then I would fold the facing over the zipper and sew it all. It would look very nice but I don't know if it would zip well, I guess that it would depend on what kind of fabric was used.

Hi Pam, Thanks for the tip to "sandwich" the zipper in the facing. It really worked - the top edge at the zipper is quite neat. I'm short waisted and never tuck anything in so it will be hidden in any event, but the finished edges will ensure that it won't disintegrate while laundered. I'm going to sew a co-ordinating jacket now, but this one has a pattern. Thanks again, Karen
