I haven't posted for ages, but I have been quilting like crazy! However, now I am ready to get back to making things for my home and I have a question. Does anyone have information or detailed directions about making an upholstered headboard for a king-size bed? I am looking for a really good book on home dec for this and/or window treatments and pillows. Thanks! Gayle

Hi Gayle and welcome to Sew Whats New. Have you seen the Singer Sewing book for the home. It has excellent photos and directions. I refer to mine a lot. MaryW

Gayle, Just this last winter we made an upholstered head board and it was real easy. We measured the mattress and cut a piece of plywood. I curved the top of the plywood. I layed the fabric down and then put batting and then layed the plywood on top. I stapled the fabric in place on all four sides before I did the corners. When it was all stapled we nailed a strip of molding on the curve and I am real pleased with it. My husband had made posts to put the headboard in between. I think he did a real professional job. |

Thanks Mary and Shirley! I knew someone would have the answers. I haven't seen the Singer book, but I will look for it. I have one book and did find some directions on-line, but it helps me a lot to find someone who has done what I want to do--I never thought about using wood moulding to trim out the board. That is a great idea! I was at Hancock's today and they have a place that will make the headboard for you with your fabric for around $350. They have several different styles to choose from, so this is an option too. But, I could use that $350 for quilt fabric. So, Shirley, how did you handle the legs? Did you paint them or put fabric on them or just attach your board to the wall? Gayle Gayle

I pickle painted the legs and then sanded it a bit to give an aged look. My husband cut a groove in the legs so you can slide the headboard in between. We then screwed it from the back to secure it. Small corner brackets work also. I used a kaki denim fabric for the headboard. It only cost me about $30 for the fabric. |

Sounds like a great headboard, Shirley. We are still in the planning process, but I will let you know how we progress. And, I am sure I will be back asking questions!
