I am working on a sleeve band and sleeve. I have attached the band, I know it is on right and here are the instructions for the last part of it.

On ouside, using a straight stitch, stitch across sleeve band, forming a wide zigzag effect, as shown.

All I can see is a zigzag. Isn't zigzag, zigzag? I have a zigzag already on that band where they had me zigzag the band onto the sleeve. So about 1 inch from the edge of the band is a row of zigzag already. Now if have the folded edge of the band and need to sew it again. What am I not understanding here?

Thanks,
Jolene

That is an interesting question. I have seen cuffs, collars, etc. where they tell you to sew the backside on first, fold over and then straight stitch on the top, but not zig zag....the effect is that the stitching is reinforced anyway because you have two seams..and the top stitch reinforces two folded edges...at least four layers and interfacing. I really don't know the purpose of zig zagging something that will be enclosed and reinforced anyway unless it is something that would ravel or for decoration. I usually zig zag or secure something that I know will have a lot of pressure, will ravel a lot, will be exposed to wear against the skin, or wear and/or weakness due to washing. What pattern is this?

Pam,
This is pattern Butterick 4055. I did figure this out and I think it is for decorative value and when you see the pattern you will know why. I will be reviewing this soon on Patternreview.com.

This is a great pattern and they make 4056 for adults. There were some problems with the pattern but I will definately be making this again.

Thanks,
Jolene

Maybe its the fact that in my 25 plus years doing Income tax returns and having to learn how to read the 'Master Tax Guide' that I learned that every word has to be noted.. I did not have any trouble understanding that line of instructions that you repeated above.. The only part I can't talk about is , it says "as shown" and of course I don't know how clear the 'as shown' illustration is, since I have not seen the pattern instruction sheet..

I understood too. It was not the what, or how, or when or where.....it was the why would you do that....the answer was in the product.

I am so glad for those of you who do understand the things that I don't get at first or I would be sunk! It makes sense to me now that I have done it but at the time it just was not sinking in. I give thanks all the time for the sewing boards that I go to for help, it would be a real struggle without you all. Thanks everyone!

BTW: Here is a link to my review of the pattern:

I think it is so 'cool' that you review patterns.. Is this a business? Or do you just do it for fun? I had never thought about patterns being test marketed like foods are..I admire what you are doing.. If I were more into writing, I might like to do some of that..I'm a great proof reader, but not a creative writer..
BTW-- I enjoyed reading your review..

Libby,
Anyone who joins that website can write reviews and they have a form to help you write them. You can go there and read a lot of stuff for free but there is some things you can't do unless you are a paying member. It is only $30.00 a year and you can pay several different ways. I just did 6 months to start to see if I would like it and I know that it is well worth my money and I enjoy doing the reviews. There are neat things going on over there. You should read more on the home page and find out about how to become a "Friend of Pattern Review".

http://www.patternreview.com/

I get paid no money it is just the fun of it. These are not a test either for pattern companies, just peoples personal opinions and their experiences with different patterns.

All of these boards serve a purpose and I like them all. I go to 4 different boards.

I hope this helps to understand about Pattern Review.
