As a noun it's a little extra room to move. As a verb, there are several ways to do it ranging from just stretching one piece of fabric a little as you sew it to another to almost gathering the fabric before sewing it to another.

The difference between ease and gather is that when you gather you see the ripple. When you ease you should not see the ripple of the fabric. In sewing it is the fine art of making something larger fit something smaller...like the round curve of a sleeve head fit into the arm hole.

If your talking about design ease...that is basically "wiggle room"

You need deasign ease in order to move around in your clothing. Different things have different amounts of ease. It is built into patterns, but (ask me how I know this lol) make sure when you alter a pattern, to add design ease lol

Oh, I'm sorry. Absolutely and a very good point. A lot of people see a number of inches in the width of a pattern and if it is bigger than they are, they think it is enough or maybe even too much.
