Okay, so for a couple years I have been trying to think of something I can make that perhaps, if I get good enough I could submit to my local Crafts Council or perhaps local shops, and see (just for fun...well, not fun I guess, I would love to get serious at it, but fun for now) if I could sell it. So...for several years I've been teaching myself to quilt, but the stuff I do is too large and it takes me forever to finish them, and quilts are soooo plentiful at local stores, so I was thinking smaller.
What about a pillow...my question is...would you all consider a pillow to be a beginner project, because really, even though I've been using my machine for years, I still consider myself a beginner and would like to start somewhere I can be successful, and build technique and knowledge of sewing while I develop a couple products. I also have kids and a house to keep in order so I need to do something that I can accomplish and get a sense of satisfaction...quilts take me forever, and even though I love quilting, I need a break from it at times too.

What do you think...pillow a relatively easy thing to make if you have a decent working knowledge of sewing and design?

Pillows are fine. They are not too hard, do not take too much fabric and are pretty easy to sew. You can also find all kinds of pillows to make. This is not such a bad place to incorporate some quilting too. You need to be mindful that when people decorate they may spend a lot on accessories including pillows, but there are so many colors and designs you need to keep your colors rather "middle of the road" in terms of decorating. I have seen entire craft booths done in decorator pillows. The major cost will be more in the stuffing than the fabric but if you come up with designs that people want, they sometimes pay quite a lot for one pillow.

I'd also embroider/embellish a 'decorator' pillow more than usual......I live in FL and some of the 'rich' old folks who come here to live, LOVE all the fancy stuff for their condo's....

Pillows are a great idea. I have a new friend that actually buys shower curtains (fancy fabric ones) and makes them into pillows and curtains. They are really cheap on clearance. Add some fancy cording and a tassle or two and you should be able to get a pretty high end clientele. I love to use the JCPenney catalog for ideas. They are fairly main stream decorating style so my theory is that if I duplicate their styles I should be safe. Good luck and have fun!!

All sorts of bags, totes, purses etc. are relatively cheap to make and sew up quickly. There are lots of patterns on line.
