Just a quick note...

Today, I went to the grocery store to pick up milk and other little incidentals.. I noticed that when the gliding doors opened into the "produce dept".. CHERRIES were on sale... $1.97 per pound... Originally priced at #$4.99

Ok.. so I picked up a wonderful bag of my favourite fruit.. the "cherry"

When I got to the check out .. these cherries would have cost me $17.99 on a regular day.. but today they were $6.97

Since.. there were other items within my sale of $16.24.. I did not make a scene and took my buggy with 3 bags to the car... Then I noticed it!!!!! They weighed in those cherries at 3.54 pounds... NO WAY was that little bag weighing in at 1 pound let alone 3 pounds...

The cherries went back with the sales receipt... She gave me my money back and asked for the receipt at that time... I said "Why?" would you need my receipt for the other articles that I have purchased... She said.. "I just need it". OK.. I handed it over.. but I realized something at that point...

There is a scam with the weight of ALL produce...

Buyer Beware... Scale in.. making sure you are not getting scammed...

BTW.. that purchased was made at Harris Teeters North Carolina.

Karen don't just accept that this practice goes on. Make a report to the Consumer Protection Division of the North Carolina Attorney General's office. Those people are getting rich off of scamming unsuspecting shoppers.

One thing I've noticed at small, independent produce shops and stalls is them holding on to the stuff as they weigh it and pressing down a bit. If you ask them to remove their hand the weight decreases. You get a nasty look, but you also get a fair price.

In the supermarkets I think cashiers are getting less and less training for their jobs. They may be pushing down on the scale without realizing. They seem to think fruits and bread belong at the bottom of the grocery bag, with cans and bottles on top. I try to go to the places that are set up to bag it yourself.

The other side of this: my son is a produce manager for one of the busiest stores here in toronto and there are customers that are not NICE....they swear at him, call him names, threaten to get him fired....these are the people that go in at 9:45 pm (store closes at 10) and want fresh produce.

I happen to go in one day and there is this guy just irate over something stupid and my son very patiently told him the truck comes in the morning with fresh stuff, well this wasn't good enough for him...demanded my son go in the back and get some. Well that's it...I walked over and told him to go in the back and check for his damn self and to get a grip or I would grip something that would paralyze him for a very long time....needless to say he left LOL

This reminds of the time I was at a Safeway store in Seaside and went to buy meat bones for my dogs. I looked at Oxtails and noticed the price of $32.50 on a package the size of 3 pork chops. I wondered why Ox Tails were so pricey. So, I ask the butcher to tell me and he sheepishly admitted that "someone" had priced them incorrectly. (No one ever admits blame any more).

Well, I can tell you, I certainly weigh my own things, check my receipts and don't hesitate to make myself heard if the need arises. I try to me nice but firm.

From a different store I once bought broccoli that ended up
being covered with bugs. Ugh! I immediately threw it in a plastic bag (sealed) and delivered it back to the store with my receipt. Not only was I given double my money back, but they also covered the costs of the meat and other items I had purchased for a sit down meal with guests. So, it depends on the store and how you let your dissatisfaction be known.

I ususally try to watch the prices ring up because a lot of times, things will be on sale in the aisles and not in the registers. I know that cashiers don't like it when you hold up their line for price checks but hey, it's my money I'm spending and not theirs. Besides, grocery stores, especially, make a lot of money because people don't watch the prices as they ring up.

This reminds me of a trip to the grocer where DH and I got 12 ears of corn. It was on sale for $2, but rang up at $6. DH was very polite to the cashier but she didn't have a clue as to what to do. We had the sale flyer and showed it to her and explained that we were charged too much. She kept telling us we had to pay. Finally got a supervisor over and she told us that the prices are loaded into the system at headquarters and no one had noticed the error until that day. The supervisor told the cashier that she would have to make sure when corn came thru she would have to deduct more money. Her reply was "but I'll have to get the key each time" I wonder how many customers paid too much for the corn and didn't realize it. I must say the corn was delicious:bg:

I'm certain cashiers do not purposely overcharge on prices. The problem is that the Management hasn't updated prices for scanning. I think that's a pretty standard chore.

But, this would not necessarily be the cashier's responsibility, afterall. It's Passing-the-Buck Style of Management and it's irresponsible. I love the young, tall, good-looking managers of the store that never seems to stick around. It's refreshing to see those enthusiatic young men with visions of Management in their eyes.

I'm willing to bet there are other problems with those stores (the grass is growing through the parking lot pavemnet, the building needs painting, the rows are not neatly kept.

I stopped at the store tonight for a gallon of milk and loaf of bread. Got my own cart, picked up my items, and then had to scan them myself, fight the "self-checkout" machine to accept my money (it doesn't like $1 bills or pennies). Then I dutifully picked up my receipt, dropped it in the trash bin, carried out my own groceries and returned the cart to the stall at the front. It dawned on me when I got in the car that I did all the work for the grocery store folks and paid more than I did last year for the same two items. I felt so stupid and angry. Next thing they'll be having us stock shelves and mop up.

I MISS ONLINE GROCERY SHOPPING! PLEASE SOMEONE BRING IT BACK TO DALLAS!:)

Shellymoon all of the Albertsons here in Oklahoma City are trying to implement the same system. However, they do have a couple of cashier lanes still available and those are always backed up. No one wants to hassle with the self-checkout things yet. I have a feeling that before too much longer, we won't have a choice and if you don't have a debit card of some kind or cash you won't be able to grocery shop very easily.

I have also worked in retail for 15 years!!! and then some.. I know that it is not a very "rewarding" job at the best of times..

To start off with.. the reason for my original post was due to the "uneven scale" of produce!! I find that pretty horrifing to be depleting my purse because the "signage" words states that it is a SALE.. when in fact it is a poor excuse for "tantalizing" the customers. and we may walk away and not realize that we have been "scaled down"... "used"

I try to become aware of ALL little "perks" and make sure that I do not fall for them...

Now the other side of the coin.. is educating the staff!!! If the grocery store CEOs would make sure that the staff is "happy" when they serve the person spending $$s on food incidentals rather than spending those same $$s on pleasure's adventures .. it would work for everyone.. BUT they do not know how to budget salaries for the staff that cares!! OH WELL..

I make sure that I am friendly and smile at the person handling MY money after I give it to them.. and if they do not smile back.. OH WELL.. it is their loss for a gift of happier times. ...

I'm the same way. I try to be pleasant to the person checking me out and I try not to act like I'm the busiest person in the store and that my time is more valuable than the other shoppers. However, some days it's pretty hard when there are a bunch of screaming children along with rude shoppers who feel their lives are more important than anyone else's. I usually try to pay pretty close attention to what the prices are on the items I buy and what acutally rings up but I'm sure there are times when I've been way overcharged for certain items.

I guess I'm lucky....I shop at Publix here in NW FL. It's clean....the employees ALL speak to you in a nice manner. They help you ANY way they can. So far I've found NO cheating...it's only been open about 2 yrs now, but has all the same employees it started with. (some of the places around here change people so much you don't see the same ones 2 wks in a row). Before I was stuck shopping at Winn Dixie (bad, and getting worse) or Wally World (THE worst place to try and shop....the crush of people in there almost 24 hrs a day is amazing).

Sewhappie that's what Wal-Mart is called all across the U.S. I have yet to figure out what the allure for Wal-Mart can possibly be. I hate going there and only do so when I've exhausted all other sources for what I'm looking for. Whenever I do force myself to go, the people are always in such a frenzy that I can hardly wait to get out in the fresh air. I mean the people that shop at Wal-Mart seem to do so in a manner that would make you think they're afraid there won't be anything to buy in the next hour or next day. Yesshhh!

I don't find Wally World all that amusing either....I ONLY go there to buy certain things , because I live in a small town with few places to buy stuff...mostly I buy craft things. (no fabric though.. it's too cheap and sleazy)

Each Wal-Mart buys its own fabric.. So , if yours has sleazy fabric, it has a sleazy dept. head over the fabric dept..There are 2 stores not too far from me....and they are like night and day as far as the fabric depts. go..I find great fabric at one of them..The other one is not so good, and I seldom find a good buy there..It is in a more transient neighborhood and I think thats why..Those people are too busy moving and don't have time to sew..
