I know it's a bit early for this subject but it takes so long to complete things these days, I thought I'd get a jump on things.

I'd like to cross-stitch some Christmas gift tags/ornaments that I saw in a craft magazine. As far as gifts, maybe an openwork, lace pattern scarf or shawl for my mother.

Traditionally, we make one or two decorations for The Tree and buy a few new things. This year I'm determined to make a tree ring for the floor under the tree. I've always wanted one and can't believe I've never gotten around to making one, yet.

I think they're made out of felt but I guess other fabrics might work too. I didn't see a pattern for this im my craft catalog.

Do you mean a tree skirt ??? (typically goes around the bottom of the tree to hide the stand).

www.google.com and type in tree skirt patterns....there's loads of'em...

Christmas in July. Good for you thinking ahead. :bluesmile

This is weird because I had the very same idea the other idea. I want some new ornaments. Hmm.

You wouldn't believe how hard I tried to remember the words Tree Skirt and brain was just not up to par.

Thanks for mentioning the link and I'll check it out.

Of course, there's still Back-to-School and Halloween costumes to also think about now. These are all major happenings with a grade schooler in the house.

I shall be starting my Christmas knitting - DD1 wants an Aran sweater and they take Forever! I have started some fingerless gloves but the size is all wrong so I shall have to take them apart and start again. She wants them with mitten bits that flap over the top so you can expose the fingies to do things without having to take the gloves off. I'll just have to make it up!

Those Aran sweaters are beautiful! I have always admired them. My SIL made me an Aran type pullover with hood attached. Patterned down both front, back and sleeves. I love it!

I made one for hubby once - never again - there was so much work in it, it took forever! Katie wants hers in red - not a traditional colour but I have a lovely deep red with a slight blue fleck that should come out fine, I don't want her to know I'm knitting it so I maight have to wait until sje is at college before I start.

Aran knit designs are my absolute favorite! In fact, the last 4 projects I made involved various Aran patterns. My favortite was a button down vest in a reddish/wine colored tweed that turned out beautifully. Unfortunately, it's somewhat scratchy that it's more a piece of artwork that wearing apparel. But I get to see more of it as art than as a garment anyway.

They do take a lot of time but it's thrilling when you have kept track of the instructions and end up with a textile that turns into a garment. Arans require 3x5 spiral note cards and a chart. And knitting in the round on quicksilver needles!

Once I've been through all the pattern repeats once I'm fine - some of them are simple to do and don't require counting after that. I'm not so much into bobbles as allthe interweaving. It's the old celt rising! She does still want one, bit in a deep wine colour and Not Baggy. These are meant to be warn with a lot of ease but she likes her jumpers tight. I guess I'll make it a size smaller and make the sleeves longer - I have a tendancy to loose tension at best. I've also just found a fab pattern for a beachbag/shopping bag in a magazine that loks like it could make up quickly. Could be bags for all the ladies this year!

I took my knitting on holiday to France. Completed the back and halfway up one sleeve when I realised that I had read the pattern wrong on the back...finished the sleeve and started another and I will have to undo the back as I can't stand it when they are not symetrical, it smacks you right in the eye. DD1 wouldn't notice but I Would Know! I forgot to twist one of my chains around the other way - I can't believe I did that! Still there is plent of time before I become the Neurotic knitting woman of old Royston Town.

Margot, I know what you mean about something like that smacking you in the face once done. I crocheted an afghan for my Mom years ago and ran out of yarn and couldn't find what I needed and was about 4 rows too short for the last pattern. Mom was there when I finished not knowing it was for her. She said no one would notice. When she opened it Christmas morn, she said the first thing she did was look at it to see if I ever did find the yarn needed! I now have the afghan back and it still hits me in the face every time I see it.

weB2cats...I dont think your too early, in between the gardening, doing
preserving, visitors, summer vacs etc. I try to start some of my things like
for baskets and there are some things if I dont start now, I know I wont
get to in Dec. so when I'm sewing I will work on small items as well because
I will end up baking etc. for others in Dec. and one cannot do everything.
One of the things I will be making is towel wraps for a couple of the gals
who dont like robes. Velcro for closing, a nice fluffy towel & pretty trims,is
all it takes.
