Well, having moved hell and high water to get the Henry VIII period costume made for DD1 it is now time to make it over as in the reign of Elizabeth I.
I have removed the bodice from the dress and cut off 2 inches as I had made it too long to be authentic - also widening the back as it was pulling badly. I have shortened the farthingale but have yet to shorten the underskirt. The overdress now needs rehemming.
I have a great pattern for a soft hat http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/100pages/RENHAT.HTM and have made a shoulder roll as in this link http://www.saragrace.net/3A_SHLDR_ROLL_by_sg.htm- I have used the gold brocade and rose velvet alternately with pearl trim along the seams.
I hope to have the time to make a partlet http://www.vertetsable.com/demos_partlets.htm and have to make some close fitting gold brocade sleeves. It is not as much as it sounds and I really looking forward to making the hat. The embelishment is the fun in this game!
love and kisses, Jan

Good grief, those people wore a LOT of clothes. I would never remember to put half of it on.

I really need one of those hats. LOL.

Jan,
I hope that kid is keeping the house clean and putting dinner on the table for six months. I make my girls grovel before I even sew on a button or hem a skirt.

I try not to gloat when I'm sewing - it has been a fantastic learning curve. I've never made a thing without a paper pattern before, and now I've made toiles, designed things from pictures and had a fab time researching the blackwork and embellishments. She leaves home for Uni in a few months so this is our final project we have worked on together. She has made the shifts and a cloak (lined no less! which considering she couldn't sew before has been a real achievemnt for her too. How often do you get 7m of velvet and 5 of brocade and get told to go and make dressing up clothes? It's been fun! I only wish it fitted me!

As to the household running, We Have Our Arrangements!:bluewink:

In this picture you can see the Henry VIII dress. My daughter is the poor sap on the right with the aweful french hood. You can see the dress doesn't stand up to a weekend of bowing and scraping to the Queen!
I have made the Elizabethan hat, a jaunty little number! and the shoulder rolls are finished. I have been informed I now have to make a bum roll ( should be fun) and the toiile for the sleeves works so I'll hopefully get them done today. Still have the stomacher to do and the dress and underskirt to hem.
