I have been asked to post this project. It has no affiliation with Sew Whats New or any of the members of this site. The hugs project is trying to send all of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan hugs (cooling ties) to help them with the heat. They are making the ties and can use all the help they can get. Please visit <email address removed for privacy> for the info. Please let me know if you can post this. MaryW

Hello Everyone, My name is Karen and I live in Edmond, Oklahoma. I received an email from someone today telling me that they had learned of our project via the Bernina site. I just had to come over and check it out. It was very nice of Mary W. to let all of you hear about what we're trying to do. Our "mission" is to place a "hug" around the neck of every American living in the Middle East this summer. I'm sure you all know that the temperatures in Iraq can exceed 135+ degrees. I read a story recently about a 22 year old woman who collapsed and died while standing guard duty. And, it is getting hotter with each passing day. Right now, 119-120 is the norm. Can you even imagine 15 degrees hotter than that? I know that it's been proven that these little cooling ties can lower body heat by as much as 1-4 degrees. I struggle with guilt over this young woman's death. Could one of our hugs have saved her life? I don't know. I do know I don't want to hear of any more deaths from heat related problems. So, my husband and I (we borrowed my Mother's Bernina 801 and both learned to sew to do this) get home from our night jobs, we often work 3-4 hours or more making cooling ties. My husband, who served in the Middle East during Desert Shield and Storm says that "your family has to love and support you. BUT, when you get a letter or a package from a total stranger, you are just blown away. What that does, in a positive way, to improve your morale is almost unbelievable." Now, he wants to give that same wonderful feeling to as many service people as possible. If you would like to join us in this effort, I urge you to contact me at thehugsproject(at)cox.net Replace the (at) sign with a @, of course. It's not too late to join in, it stays hot in Iraq until November. They are really suffering right now so please write me today and let me send you the directions to make and send hugs to the Middle East. It's the perfect sewing project for beginners and sewing goddesses alike. ;o) I guarantee you that the great feeling you get by helping a young service member will be unmatched anywhere. I sleep under a blanket of freedom each night in my comfortable bed, as many of them sleep on the ground. That freedom I enjoy, it was placed there by generations of US military members who are now responsible for the freeing of the Iraqi people after years of evil domination. They believe in what they are doing...and I believe in them. This is one small way for us all to give back. Will you join me? Hi Karen. The Stitchin' Sisters Quilt Guild in Midwest City is involved in a big way in this progject. They have just completed around 117 "cool ties" and will be making more this week. I just finished 30 to be sent with boxes going from my chuch last week. I have the instructions and will be making more as I have time. Ladies this is a really fast project if you want to get involved. However, you do have to follow the guidelines for fabric colors. Patsy Patsy

Since beginning this project in June 2004, our Yahoo group has grown to 650 members and hundreds more who are working with us. We have send over 53,000+ cooling ties, more than 9,000 care packages, 25,000 books and hundreds of handmade warm hats and neckwarmers (this winter). It will begin heating back up about March so we need many more helping us make "hugs" to let the troops in harm's way know that we care and that they are not forgotten. No American service member should ever question if their sacrifice is worth the price. You can't put a price on our freedoms. Sincerely, Karen Edmond, OK http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheHugsProject K@ren

I just wanted to pop in and hopefully find some new interest in helping our brave troops who stand between us and those who would do us harm. Our troops in the Middle East are now fighting low temperatures. I checked yesterday and it was 15 in Mosul and much colder still in Afghanistan. So, all fall and winter, we've been making black fleece hats and neckwarmers which they will continue to need until about April. It will start to heat back up then and our troops will face another summer of horrible triple digit heat. Last year, a young Major wrote me that their thermometer was touching 153. "Now, I have to clarify Ma'am," he said. "It's in the sun....but so are my men". He wrote me asking for more cooling ties. It's cooling ties that gave our project it's name. You see, they go around the neck, just like a "hug from home". And, that's our mission, to make sure that each American military member knows that some stranger cares about them and wishes they could actually give them a real (((hug))). But, since we can't, we send them "hugs" that can lower their body temp by as much as 5 degrees. If you would like to get involved with this wonderful effort to tell them "we care about you" and help save American lives, please write me at TheHugsProject @ cox.net (take out the spaces please). I'll send you all the info you need to get started. Our nationwide group (only missing one state, N. Dakota) has now sent out over 150,000 hugs and last year we mailed 33.5 TONS of care package items. That's a lot of love. May God richly bless you for having a big heart for our dear troops in harm's way. K@ren TheHugsProject.net...because every US service member deserves a "hug". PS If for some reason you can't participate but have a loved one serving over there, the OK City group would like to send them a care package if you would be so kind as to share their address info with us. Thank you. |

We already have more requests for cool ties this year than we can fill. Our service members are writing to let us know that it's heating up FAST in the Middle East and they are suffering after a cold winter (16 degrees in Mosul, colder in Afghanistan). It's already touching 100 and will soon be 130+. Hugs (cool ties) and Kisses (helmet coolers) can save our young Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines from dying of heat stroke but only if they each have one. So we need many more big hearted people doing this project. Please contact me at TheHugsProject (<email address removed for privacy>) and request all the directions, labeling & shipping info and other helpful tips on how you can make a difference in the lives in some of America's finest young men and women. All you need is 100% cotton fabric in desert colors and watering crystals. The question I am most often asked is, "Do you have someone serving over there". My answer is always the same, "Yes....everyone single one of them". I truly believe that and if you do too, please get involved. Thank you, Karen Check us out online at TheHugsProject.net (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheHugsProject/ ) Read a story about the OKC group on the Pentagon's website...
