The new Hancock Fabrics store opened here Thursday but I didn't make it in until Friday afternoon.
They are not completely stocked yet but I was pleased to find a lot of what is really rare in chain fabric stores around here --FABRIC!!
I managed to drop about $50.
The help needs a little practice though. The woman that cut my fabric had no idea what she was doing. But she was trying and measured twice to be sure (I kept a close eye on her). I did have to tell her I prefer she not cut my fabric with a bic pen in her hand. That confused her for a minute but then she put it down. When I checked out the manager thanked me for being so considerate, patient and understanding. These are qualities most people don't think of when they think of me. But, after a week of family and funeral and then catching up on work, just being around that much fabric was relaxing.

good for you dorothy. I know the feeling of relaxing around a lot of fabric. I'm the same way. When I get too on edge if I can make at least a 1 hour trip to browse Hancock's which is only 5 minumtes from my house, then I'm okay when I go home again.

The only drawback to living in Bastrop is that the nearest Hancock's Fabrics is 17 miles away in Austin with horrible traffic and torn-up-for-repair streets all over the place between me and the store!!! At age 77, I have promised my children I won't drive in Austin or at night any more. Truly I don't mind, because driving in Austin now is on a par with driving in Houston, which is indescribable without resorting to language unsuitable for an elderly lady! MariLynntx

I know what you mean MarilynTx . I ran to Joann's on my lunch hour and I think I used some of the language you are referring to. Geeeshhhh! Some people are total idiots behind the wheel of a motor vehicle! :whacky: I don't think the use of that language improves either the road conditions or the stupid drivers you have to conted with but it sure makes me feel a lot better for a few seconds, anyway.

It takes me 40 minutes to drive to the nearest Hancock Store and an hour to drive to the nearest Wal-Mart. I suggested that Hancock Fabrics put a store closer in town but the regional manager refused because of city politics he claimed. I try to stock up on supplies when I go but have now limited my trips to about once a month. When the store was 10 minutes from home, I would go several times a week. All of the other fabric stores and places to shop for supplies have moved to the suburbs which makes it an hour or longer just to get there. Grrr ... some of us still live within the city limits and one would think there would be a Hancock Store near the University area. Better get off of my soapbox ... Marty:cool:

Marty, Bastrop is not quite 5000 people, and as far as I can find out, Hancock's doesn't think there are enough people here who sew to compete with Wal-Mart. They may be right. Out of all the people here that I know, I am the only one who sews on a regular basis, except for the Saturday morning group I belong to, 'N Stitches. There are only two groups, ours is for all kinds of stitching, and the other is quilters ONLY. Wal-Mart is the only place where fabric is available. Very tiresome! I really understand your frustration. MariLynntx

With a population close to a million people and a large number of sewing guilds, one would think that Hancock Fabrics would offer more places to shop. However, it just isn't the way it is. I belong to ASG and several other sewing clubs. I enjoy the discounts and am always promoting sewing as an option. I try to support the local shops so they won't close even if I have to drive almost an hour to get there. With gas prices going up, my trips are becoming more limited and only for absolutely necessary items. That's just the way of the world I guess. Maybe retailers will wake up that some of us prefer to shop locally than online.
Happy Stitching!
