I know this has been discussed earlier, but the question that I had didn't get answered, and I tried posting to that forum and no one answered. My only problem really is my shoulders, and to fit some of my dresses and such stuff I need to fix that, and I can't do it on myself. So I was wondering if that dressform would work for me, because I have a 40% off coupon at Joann's for right now, and I'd rather like to use it on this. Ticia |

Hi Ticia, I have one of those from JoAnn's and I love it. Just what exactly is it you're asking about the shoulders? With all the weight I lost I need to buy another one soon. My shirts won't fit on mine and I have it all the way closed. |

That's my problem, I'm not quite sure. The more I've thought about it and looked a little, I think they're slightly forward leaning and big. I'm not really sure, all I know is I have this absolutely gorgeous dress that does not fit at all in the shoulder area, and I'm not the least bit sure about why. It is the most frustrating thing in the world. On most items, when fitting, I've figured out that if I sew a 1/4" seam allowance instead of a 3/4" allowance when joining the sleeve to the bodice it works just fine, but this did not solve the problem, but there were so many other problems with it, that I'm not at all sure what to do. So, I need a dummy to work on. Ticia |

I've had that problem with a few of the McCall's pattern. I wish I could tell you the answer to the problem but I don't have a clue. The body double I have is nice. Just is too big for me now. |

Ticia, I once read somewhere on the internet about a custom duck tape dress form. Basically, If I remember, you wear undies and a t-shirt that you don't mind getting cut in half. Then you have someone wrap duck tape around you, from your shoulders down to the hip area? Then that person cuts it off of you very carefully (up the back). Then I remember that you stuff it with paper or whatever, place a mop handle or something of that nature inside, stick it in a flower pot filled with dirt I think. Mount it on the handle, tape it back together and walla, you have a custom made dress form of yourself. A lot cheaper than purchasing. If I find the site, I'll post that for you. amusingly enough, my friend and I just tried it. It looks like me, but it created problems I don't have, like a sway back and a rather large stomach, because of how it forced me to stand as the tape was compressing. Ticia |

Well, that is good to know. I guess I won't be trying it anytime soon. I don't need a bigger belly. I did find this fun site about uses for duck tape though. http://www.ducktapeclub.com Liz Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

Have you measured the top of your shoulders, your upper back, and your torso front (from one underarm to the next) above the bust? This is how I measure for correct fitting first. If the shoulders don't fit, the top won't. My shoulders are only 4 inches and most patterns are almost 6 inches. I have to take a tuck in the pattern piece and increase across the top of the back while reducing the torso front. Sounds complicated and you will need a sewing buddy for the upper back and front measurement, it does make a difference in fit. Also, how deep do you need the armhole? I always have to increase my side seam. I tend to buy smaller patterns, fit in the shoulders and then increase from the bust point down. Our bodies change as we grow older and while we may wear the same size as we did years ago, the shape of our bodies are different which requires a different type of fitting. Hope this helps. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

I'll have to try that one. I have not yet. I had measured the shirts I found comfortable and noticed their similarities, but was not quite sure what to do from there. It sounds like I might need to do the opposite of what you do. I'll try and get my husband to help me this afternoon (don't really have any sewing buddies, who know how to garment sew yet, I'm trying to teach one or two, and I have a friend who's starting, but.....). so, my first attempt at replying, I accidentally clicked on post a new thread.... OOPS..... But, Mary, I'll have to try that next time. I just ordered the dressform. Ironically enough after ordering the dressform, there are now two classes that I just saw that are offered to show you how to do it. I will say that the one you recommended looks like the best because it would probably address the problems I had the most. Ticia |
