Hi everyone,

I'm new to this board and looking for some advice on maternity-wear business. I can design and sew maternity clothes myself and want to start a business...the problem is i dont know where to start!

And..do you guys think its (maternity-wear business) is a good idea? Im pregnant and ive made a few dresses for myself which my friends really like..and they suggested that i should start selling them

Any ideas would be very much appreciated :)

btw this board is awsome!

Most new mothers find it challenging to get dinner made or even find time to go to the bathroom.

Enjoy your dresses and the compliments. People who cannot sew often suggest this because they don't realize what is involved in making one dress, let alone multiples in multiple sizes. It happens to those who do other types of handmade things, like knitters.

Before my first child was born I had fantasies of all the things I'd be able to make because I'd be home, instead of at work. There are rumored to be children who sleep enough that the parents get sleep and even have some time to themselves. My kids are 12 and 18 and I have begun sewing again in the past couple of years.

Maybe after your baby arrives you will be making bibs and other small items and consider doing these as a business. I think this would be more likely to succeed. There are stores that would take them on consignment, or you might rent a table at a flea market or craft fair once you've sewn up a few dozen of several different items.

Congratulations on your baby to be. Save your strength for motherhood.

Hi Mariya and welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile

Motherhood is very time consuming but if you are determined perhaps you could do custom work for pregnant mothers. It is a niche, that's for sure.

You'll be busy, that's for sure. If you have time to do this and would like to do it, I'd look for a privately owned maternity boutique. We have a very nice upscale one here that would be the type of place to put your things. You would approach the owner about handling a few of your garments for resale. You wouldn't make the money you would make if you sold them yourself but you would probably be able to see a turn over and demand for your garments. In an upscale shop you they would probably sell for more money too (which might translate into more profits for you.) You would have to have labels for your brand, size, content and wash instructions for this project...all of which you should be able to order. If I were to sell baby garments or products I would also look for an upscale baby boutique. I had a friend that did this with silk scarves a few years ago and made a very nice profit. As an alternative, you might consider selling your designs or patterns some place but if you sell your designs commercially to a major company, you loose your claim to them.

Thanks alot everyone for your input :)

Yeah i have thought about how busy it'll be after the baby but I was planning on keeping a tailor (which'll be my mother , hehe) and what i'll do is design the clothes.

umm...where exactly is it? =)
