I'm going to TRY and make some 6" valances for my kitchen windows. It's 45" material that I will have to piece 3 together to make one valance. It shouldn't be hard because I have the old ones that came off it to follow. I bought 3 yards of material for this (big windows) and brought it home and washed and dried it. I think it's a cotton blend. 90% cotton. Don't know if that matters. But when it came out of the dryer, it was all freyed at the ends and looks uneven. How do I start cutting straight on this material? Should I just trim it up the best I can, using a yard stick or something? I don't want my curtains to be lopsided. Hope I'm making sense here. Thanks for your time. Carol |

Carol Pull a thread First clip into the fabric through the selvage and catch a thread. Very gently pull the thread from selvage to selvage. It will leave a line where the thread was. Then you can cut along the line. That will be straight. Now, if you are anything like me, you will certainly break the thread at least once before you get across. I just catch another thread where it broke. I figure one thread (or two or five) won't make that much difference. Even if you don't have a ragged edge you should make sure the fabric is on the straight of the grain and, as far as I know (and I don't know as much as some people on these boards) this method works the best. It's a hassle, but worth it. Dorothy |
