ok this is my first time trying to sew ever and I am now totally confused. I have a piece of pattern that says cut one on the fold and has a couple of arrows on it. here is a picture of what the pattern instructions say. OK imagine this is a square....

FOLD
I hope you can get the concept of what I was trying to draw here it didnt come thru right. Basically it is a square with the top part a little higher than the rest (the fold isnt bottom to top) so one selvage is 3/4 of the way up the fabric.

Now, the question the arrows on the pattern say center fold. what direction do I put the pattern and do I cut the folded edge?? (yes it is pattern piece #5) Should I fold the edge 3/4 of the way up and then cut out all 4 sides of the pattern so I will end up with 2 pieces of fabric??

OR....

DO I kind of wrap the pattern around the folded edge and line up the arrows and cut around all 4 sides of the pattern that way?

Place the pattern piece so that the 'center fold' side(with the double arrow) is lined up on the fold of the fabric. You cut the other three sides, NOT the folded edge. When you unfold the fabric after cutting, you should have a symmetrical piece, with the center fold being the line of symmetry.

Before cutting anything, you should always lay out all of your pattern pieces on the fabric and pin them in place to make sure you have enough.

Some pieces need to be cut on the fold because the actual paper pattern represents only half of the fabric piece to be cut.(e.g a shirt back is usually cut on the fold of the fabric).

Some pieces are cut through two layers of fabric, but not on the fold because you need two separate pieces that are 'reflections' of each other(e.g. the front of a shirt).

Other pieces are cut on a single layer of fabric because only one piece is required(e.g. a waistband of some pants is cut as a single piece and then folded on the long edge).

I hope this helps, and doesn't make everything more confusing.
Take care,
Donna

TY TY TY..... That I hope cleared it up and was what I thought I had to do but wasnt sure enough to start actually cutting. I couldnt lay out all of the pieces because of the pattern on the fabric and it was for a vallance and was sooo large scale ( I had to add both leaves into my dining room table while my hubby was laughing at me) I called the fabric store earlier and they told me I had to do each cuttin one at a time because of the pattern of the fabric or else if I folded it and cut it the way the pattern said to then I would have one side with the pattern going up and the other with all upside down wine bottles...lol. So hopefully I will have enough fabric for both windows.... if not I guess I just go buy more and do the other window later.

Thanks for your help and I think I may have to bookmark this site...lol

Sometimes you have to adjust the method a little, such as when the pattern in the fabric is one-way, or there is a nap in the fabric, so I hope I didn't steer you in the wrong direction. :whacky:

Every project is a learning experience, but there is a lot of satisfaction when you complete something and can say that you made it yourself! Good luck! :bg:
