I have never sewn with lycra. If anyone has any good tips, please respond here, thanks. I just found your site and would like to know if you might be able to give me some pointers or tips for sewing a tank top from lycra (bathing suit weight). When I sew the straps, they tend to roll. Also the trim around the neck and armholes. Thank you very much MaryW

Its been a long time since I sewed on lycra, but what I remember is a ballpoint needle, and never straight stitch, because you have to have stretch built into your stitches... Stretch stitches are ideal, if your machine has them.. Most all machines nowadays have the straight stretch stitch (say it fast , 3 times.. Ha.) which is forward 2 and back 1, or vice versa.. looks like 3 parallel stitches on the diagram of stitches...I use this and also a zigzag stitch with my settings small for the width and semi-short for the length. On my machine this is 1.5 w and 2.0 l .. Use the clear elastic where elastic is called for.. (always pull it out in your hands before you start sewing it, this prevents breakage later) That's about all I can recall.. I haven't made any swim suits lately.. Sew With Love

I sew with spandex/lycra on a weekly basis. I have tips that I use that not all people are comfortable with. I use a stretch needle it is like a sharp ball point. I love my serger with it but is I have to sew it with the regular machine i use a straight stitch with a 2.5 stitch length with a poly nlyon thread in the needle and wooly nylon in the bobbin. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Aimee do you wind the wooly nylon on the machine bobbin by hand? Patsy Patsy

Yes I do What I do is put the bobbin on the machine and then let the wooly nylon roll off my fingers and onto the bobbin. I dont put the wooly nylon through the tensioners and I dont hold the thread and let it stretch. It goes on the bobbin like it goes on the cone. The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!
