Our newest baby ferret (just 'adopted' last Oct) and not a year old yet has cancer (lymphoma)...His name is Harry and we got him after our oldest ferrets had to be put to sleep, due to cancer too. He's been a great friend to Bob (now our oldest at 4 1/2).
Thats 4 out of 5 ferrets..2 with insulinoma, 1 adrenal and 1 lymphoma, in the last 14 yrs. Ya know....I'd really like a break about now....we're good ferret parents and try to do everything right...all I really want is a healthy ferret that lives past 6 1/2.
It doesn't seem like too much to ask for, but it is....Harry is such a great guy too...smart....he actually waits for his meds, laying at my feet, because he knows they'll help him feel better and he doesn't fight taking'em....I think the vet is tired of me calling and crying...but all he can do is say 'I'm sorry'...theres nothing he can do..we can make him comfortable for now and thats it....
I'm so tired....thanks for letting me talk..

We had to put our ferret to sleep about two years ago due to adrenal tumors. She was about 8 years old, so had lived a long time. We spent about $1500 on surgery but her condition worsened. My husband had raised her from a kit and it was very hard on him.

The specialist I talked to said a lot of their adrenal and cancer problems can be due to the descenting operation most of them go through. I can't remember the details as it was a while ago.

I am very sorry for your loss. I know little Harry is very special to you. God bless you for taking such loving care of your little guys.

I haven't wandered into this particular forum before, so forgive me for being a month late in offering my condolences to Chrys and Blackie.

There is a very special place on the Best Friends Animal Society members' forum called Prayers, Healing and Support. You can post about a furbaby's illness or passing and have the support of people from all over the country who 'get it' about the bond we have with our pets. You have to register to post, but the info is kept confidential; the registration is just to keep the trolls out. If you're interested, click Best Friends then on 'You and Your Pets' and 'Member Forums'. The whole rest of the site is pretty darned cool too, if you're an animal lover!
