Any more decorative painters here?? I started doing a little painting around 19 or 20 years ago. Not as much since the quilt bug got me, but I still paint occasionally. I want to get more into it again since I've been seeing paintings on old windows. I think they're so pretty.
I saw one today that a friend did. It was beautiful. She works with oils. I work with acrylics. She wants to learn to work with acrylics and I want to learn to work with olis. So....... we're getting together to teach each other. :bluesmile

I've taken a few classes and done a few items.. I take the classes thru the Shepherds Center Organization.. Classes for those 55 and older taught by volunteers.. I have painted on Paper Mache' boxes, wooden boxes, picture frames from wood, etc.. I took one watercolor class, but that was not my thing.. I do love the decorative painting though.. I am thinking of Christmas Gifts to paint..(not much inspiration, yet.)

I've painted off and on since high school. Self taught, since I could never find paint classes were we live. I just joined the Decorative Artist Book club and have five books with some really nice projects. Hope to paint more this winter. Painting is one of my totally stress free crafts. My husband does wood working so I can have lots of projects to paint on. I have an old wooden chair that I want to distress and paint flowers and vines on. Hope to get it done this winter.

Does anyone do the Donna Dewberry style painting? I would like to hear just how easy or hard it really is.

When I took tole painting classes years ago, I was taught to base-coat, then "float" the shadows and highlights on. A few years ago I bought two of Donna Dewberry's books and tried her method. I LOVE it. It's all in the way you load your brush. It's so much faster. I painted some murals on my bathroom wall and I really like the way things turned out. Now I can freehand leaves and such and don't have to worry so much about patterns.
You ought to give it a try. :bluesmile

I've been tole painting for over 10 years and I just love it. I do both the tradtional way and Donna D's way. It depends on what I'm working on which I use. I took a six week quickie beginners course when I first started and then did it on my own til a couple of years ago when I signed up for some special projects I wanted to do. I find it very relaxing too.

I am a self taught watercolourist. When I look back at he early stuff -oooh it's BAD but I have persevered and over the years fpound more and more expression in this. I find that I am concentrating so much when I do this it is really relaxing. I painted a lot on holiday this year - poor hubby! He takes photos - as some of you know!

Hey, Cool! :bg: I didn't know we had a section here for crafts, and especially Decorative Painting! I just changed my settings for displaying the thread, and discovered this section!

I love Decorative Painting, and also other forms of art too.

Donna Dewberry's method, One Stroke is not as easy to learn as she makes it look, she's been doing it for years and years. However, if you buy the beginner kit, with the videos in it, you can learn on your own, or you can sign up for a class at a Michaels arts and crafts store, or with a local teacher. I just wouldn't try it without books alone. I did that and was SO frustrated, until a friend sent me a kit that she no longer needed, which had videos in it. Boy, did that ever make a difference!!! :)

I really enjoyed learning One Stroke, but have moved on to other styles and forms of DP too. I still paint OS, but I also love Ros Stallcups, loose and painterly style, and others.

I'm also hoping to get back into watercolours, which I had just started to learn about before we moved here, (about 7 years ago), and portraits.

If you are interested in viewing my work, click on the links below:

this is an old page, but shows a lot of my early work in Decorative Painting, plus some portraits too (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/blackstonecat)

this is some older and some newer stuff. I haven't been able to paint for over a year as I had hand surgery twice this year :( (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/blackstonecatz)

more recent photos (http://community.webshots.com/user/blackstonecat)

This is my daugther's work, my portraits inspired her to learn too :) (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/mysugarplum1)

Well, I have to get going, I have an apointment this afternoon. I hope some of you will post links to your work, I'd love to see what everyone else is doing!

hugs

Wonderful work, Emmy!! I've been painting for about 25 years, starting in oil and then switching to acrylics just because of the shorter drying time and the ease of cleaning up. I sometimes miss the "look" of oil and the blending abilities. Though you can use blenders and additives with the acrylics they still don't work quite the same. It seems there are times for both. I wonder about the newish water-based oils. Has anyone tried these? Please let me know what you think. Lately I have been on an animal and bird painting kick with a few quick landscapes thrown in for those days when I "just have to" paint something.

Hi

I'd love to try the water based oil paints too. I've read about Genisis and people really seem to like it, but it IS terribly expensive. I've also heard of other brands too, everyone seems to say that they aren't quiet like oils or acrylics. I guess you should get the trial package and just give it a try and see how you like them. Let us know how it goes, if you do.

Hi Loie,

At the craft shows in my area, painted jars are a big seller.
Also old windows with paintings on them. I've seen some with the whole glass painted with a scene, and some just have a few flowers or such painted on them.
Alot of venders had furniture with decorative paintings. Children's small chairs seemed to be selling well. I saw some cute ones.
I've also seen alot of recycled things that are painted. Like watering cans, old buckets, even old pot and pan lids.

I've never tried selling at a craft show myself. I usually want to keep everything I paint or give it as a gift. :bluewink:

I love to go to the craft shows to see what others are doing. :bluesmile

Thanks Mary! I'm so glad she started taking art more seriously, she's learning to airbrush now! Something that I've wanted to do for a long, long time, I'm hoping to try it soon. Have done a little bit of the practice stuff, but everything is on hold while my hand heals from CTR surgery.

Hi Loie,

... painted jars are a big seller... Also old windows with paintings on them.
I've never tried selling at a craft show myself. I usually want to keep everything I paint or give it as a gift.

I paint on glass jars a bit. Haven't been able to paint this year very much, (because of surgery on both hands). Glass jars are a cheap surface, you can get family and friends to save them for you, ask them to keep the lids too.

Ask for clean jars, with no raised design on them, and hopefully with labels removed, as they would do for recycling. Ask them to try to keep the lids rust-free, so you can use them.

I use these hand painted jars as gifts, and my family just loves them. I fill them with a variety of things from specialty teas, to wild rice, pastas, and herbs from my garden, to buttons for mending. A matching set makes a nice gift, rather like a set of cannisters, but unique. They are more fragile than metal cannisters, but they can be very pretty and everyone seems to love them.

I also use them myself for herbs, teas, pasta, and all sorts of things. I have a few in my photo site. There are a couple of books on painting jars, not sure of the titles, I don't have any of them, but I'm sure you could find them if you checked online at www.artistsclub.com or elsewhere.

I usually do a basecoat of Folk Arts glass and tile medium, then let cure a couple of weeks, paint, seal with it, let it cure well, and then seal with a water based polyurethane. OR you can use the new Folk Art Enamels instead, OR PermEnamels (different company, but they are supposed to be tougher than Plaids enamels, according to the people who have tried both anyway).

I've read about and seen painted windows on the net, but haven't tried this yet. My husband just threw out a few I could have painted, but since I can't paint until sometime next year, and he had to clean up the shed, they had to go. :( Oh well, there are lots of flea markets with cheap windows around here!

Another cheap surface is Masonite. You can cut it to fit picture frames from Walmart.

Watch for things on the curbside too, you never know what you'll find to paint! I just wish my husband would stop the van so I could claim some of the recylclable treasures that people toss out around here. He won't let me go to flea markets either! :nc:

Got to go, have fun painting

I had knee surgery a few weeks back, so I haven't been able to sew. Before my surgery,I stocked up on small surfaces to paint. I've made snowmen, penguins, cats, dogs...all with a Christmas theme. I find crafting to be sooooo therapeutic.

I've also painted on glass jars, but I started by doing rock painting, like this: www.linwellford.com

Some of the stuff I will sell, but most of it is given away as gifts. I made my hubby a pic of a big rig truck (he's a long haul driver) that I drew and painted myself. He was/is so proud of it in the front yard.

If I can figure out how to show you some pics, I will post them.

Hi Maggi

I haven't even gotten started on Christmas gifts yet. This surgery has really set me back and I don't think I'm going to be able to make any gifts this year. Our budget is pretty tight too, so I'm not sure what we'll do. We'll figure something out I guess.

I find it relaxing to paint, that's why I started up again. I was doing a bit of watercolour, plus portraits, then we moved and it all had to be packed. Life got too busy and I didn't do any of it for ages. Then I decided to start decorative painting for relaxation, as I had way too much stress in my life. It really does help.

I've seen Lin's books and would love to get all of them. I haven't tried rock painting yet, but plan to do some next year. I joined the rock painting group at Yahoo.

Would love to see some of your work, hope you can scan or take digital pictures. Once you do, you can set up a free photo account at Yahoo, and share them with freinds and family.

I hope your knees heal quickly. I just found out that I have arthritis in mine. My doctor didn't even bother to tell me about it, the physiotherapist read it to me from my chart. Nice of my doc to inform me eh? I've suspected it for a while. The xray's confirmed it. :( Not the first joints to go either, I guess it explains all the pain.

Well, I've got to go, my knees can only take so much of sitting here, not to mention other regions that have had enough, LOL! :bolt:

Take care everyone,
hugs

Unfortunately, the hot ticket items seem to be cheap imported knockoffs. I'm not kidding. I am in several painting groups, and all the members that do shows are complaining about it. They just can't compete.

I have tried various types of painting over the years. It is very relaxing, and so easy to caught up in. The time just flies while painting. I have the Donna Dewberry video on the One Stroke style of painting. It was fun to give it a try,
but I need a LOT more practice time. The picture frames that I did turned out OK, hopefully better the next time.
A few years ago when the painted sweatshirt craze was going on I made quite a few and sold them, I really enjoyed doing them. Now I am doing some Gallery Glass
[faux stained glass]. My grandchildren love coming over to
do Gallery Glass too. They make suncatchers which they are so proud of. The best craft I have ever been involved with is ceramics. My husband bought a kiln for me quite a
few years ago. It has brought much pleasure to me and my kids. We all did ceramics when they were at home yet.
Now that I have retired my sewing machine gets a work out. My 8 year old granddaughter is learning how to sew.
If my craft can be shared and enjoyed by others it is so
satisfying. I am sure you all feel the same way.
Happy Crafting, Nina :bg:

Yes, I love crafting to make gifts to give, and to enjoy the creative process too.

I do Gallery Glass too, but only in the summertime, when I can keep the windows wide open. The smell of the product makes my eyes burn, so I need lots of fresh air.

I have a few items posted here... I always seem to forget to take photos before giving projects away as gifts.

http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/blackstonecat

I'd like to do another window, and maybe redo parts of the door window shown. I have some smaller projects to work on for summer. I had hand surgery, so I'm not sure that I'll be ready to do it this year, but if not, maybe next year. That GG is very stiff and hard to squeeze evenly out of the bottles.

My youngest daughter is the artist with paint and the such at my house. I tried to do the One Stroke. She was flying through it, I was struggling terribly. JoAnn's offers classes here and I thought of taking one, but never found the time. I myself didn't think it was easy. DD helped me with it and I still struggled. I am not an artist with any painting medium except my walls. I did do the rag painting in my bathroom to make it look like the sea, and she did all the details. I have the 50's blue tile everywhere in that bathroom and thought we would make it look like we were in the ocean.

I haven't been able to paint much in the last 2 years. I had surgery on both hands and I'm still recuperating from the second one. I hope to start painting again sometime this year, but it might take longer than expected.

Right now I'm just trying to get my strength back, and dealing with health problems. I just found out around Christmas that I have arthritis, so that's one more to add to the list. Like I need another one.

Well, its late and I'd better get some sleep, if I can, LOL.

Hi,

I have been painting off and on for about 15 years. I took my first class when I was 18. After I graduated high school. I have some of those windows to paint. but I have never used enamels. Any tips would be great. How much do they sell for at the shows? I have no idea what to price mine at.

I'm new to the forum. My name is Cynthia, you can call me Cyn. for short.
I love sewing, but often don't get to do it. I have painted on pillows and sewn some for profit. I do have picturetrail, if you like to view my work.
I've been painting since a kid, but now I combine the two.
I mostly do accessories.
I have loving hubby, and 5 kids. One from birth the rest are from my hubby's last marriage.
That's me in a nut shell.
Thanks for having me.
Here is my work if you like to look.

Fantastic painting ladies!!! I'm a painter too. I was always drawing all my life but I started out painting by doing a tole art class about 15 years ago. I really love using acrylics. I took an oil paint colour course at Emily Carr Art school here in Vancouver for fun - it was sooo much work but I sure learned a lot. I was working full time and had to pull a few all nighters to get my weekly assignments done. Of course, this was before I had children. The painting got me interested in wood working and I've gradually been getting tools over the years (router, jig saw...).
I haven't painted anything other than some small Christmas ornaments in the past 4 years and I'm just itching to do something. I sketched out a big picture but have yet to get out the paint. I don't want my kids getting into my stuff! I do mostly folk art - farms with cows, sheep, barn and a bit of light houses, boats... My daughter is pestering me to paint some roses on her walls, which I will do but all her bedroom walls need to be painted first.
I will post pictures eventually! I promise (the list is growing and growing, I need to figure out how first).
Oh yes, My favourite artists are Charles Wysocki and Warren Kimble.

Hi
I'm from N.Ireland and I just love painting crafts. I would paint anything that stayed still longer than 2 seconds, but the popular gifts that I paint are milk churns, door slates, pet portraits, tinware, etc, creating very personal orders for people.

I also teach a 'Painting for Pleasure' class, which I absolutely love doing. It teaching adults who basically bring in their own paintings and learn how to paint them. It's great fun!

Anyway, I just thought I'd say hello.
