Apparently pleated skirts are back in fashion this fall. What's the Before-You-Begin advice for a first-timer?

You need to go to the library and get a good sewing book with lots of illustrations and it will have a whole chapter on pleats.. There are so many different kinds and sewing methods differ for each and some of them have several different sewing methods.. So, go do your homework and then, make a decision on what kind of pleated item you want to tackle.. Then you will have specific questions to ask, and there will be someone here that can answer them..

One tip I learned making Cheer Leader Outfits. I had trouble getting the stitching across the top of box pleats even. I made a template of the correct stitch lines out of plastic grafting sheets. When I got ready to sew the pleats down, I placed the template at the top of the pleat and used it as a guide to mark the lines with a chalk marker before I stitched them down. The pleates were better placed and more even than any other method I tried.

Most usually, the pattern you use for a pleated garment will have the markings on it for the pleats and all you have to do is transfer those markings to your fabric when you're finished cutting the pattern and sew from there. Getting the pleats set straight is the major trick.
