Hello, I consider myself new to sewing. Got my first machine 8 months ago. And my family refer to me as a FABRIC ADDICT... (Can't walk past a fabric store without going in... Shoe stores too...) So far I've been pretty daring. I made myself a business suit in microsuede, a camp shirt for my DH, a pleated wrap skirt and a formal gown. Now, this is where I've messed up... Hopefully one of you experts can help me. The gown's neckline is MUCH too high. I had made it before I got my dressform so fitting was hit and miss... How does one lower an interfaced neckline? THANKS LADIES!!! Tammy |

If the shoulders fit and you like the neckline you have, you can turn the garment inside out and use your pattern piece to place it at the new lower depth. Before you begin, you need to carefully decide how much lower it should be and you need to BE SURE AND ADD THE SEAM ALLOWANCE to the top of your neckline. If the garment is self-lined with no facing, you may be able to cut the lining and the dress at the same time. Then I would just add a new interfacing to the neckline. It is usually possible to remove the old interfacing if it is iron-in by reheating it with a warm iron and carefully pulling it off. Some residule glue will remain on the garment so once it is removed, I wouldn't iron the garment without something over it until you get the new interfacing added. Now. When you go to cut your new interfacing and or facing, you lay your garment down on a piece of paper and trace the new neckline. You can use your old pattern piece for the shoulder line. Use your old pattern piece for the facing/interfacing to judge how wide you need to make the new pattern piece. When you have done this, you will have a pattern to cut the pieces for your new neckline. You can then add your interfacing and or facing to your new neckline. If you are careful, you should find this process pretty easy to do. If you only add the interfacing to the neckline, just cut your interfacing using the new pattern, add it to the neckline and sew.
