We need new furniture. We've had custom furniture made for us before in different states and we like the idea of getting what we want. Well today we had a very nice experience (heavily sarcastic)...We went to a store in a neighboring town (Destin where all the rich (or so they think) people go to play/live) it's an upscale store with custom furniture and a great variety of fabric. My husband and I usually wear jeans and t-shirts on the weekends, easier all the way around in FL. (especially in the summer) The salesman who 'waited' on us, decided to tell us we weren't going to find what we wanted in his store and proceeded to direct us to all the 'low end', cheaply made chain stores he could think of...and ushered us out the door...
Now I realize that I'm short, fat and ugly..most often I look like the tourists who populate this place in the summer. (no shorts and no tank tops though :bg: ) But you know what....last time I looked our money was as good as anyone else's. I'm only slightly mad, because I know that I can go to another town and make a furniture store VERY happy and spend my money there. I also wrote the store in Destin an unsatisfied potential customer e-mail...they probably won't care, but now I feel better.
Does this sort of thing happen to anyone else ??? Inquiring minds want to know..... :nc:

It sure does. Sometimes I dress if I really want the attention, but mostly I figure I don't want to deal with them if they are disrespectful. Then there are stores that just act snobby and rejecting, as if they are doing you a favor even letting you through the door. You have to wonder who their customer base is.

My 2 sons would not let you leave if they had been with you.. They would 'very politely' ask for the manager and then tell the manager in front of that sales person that he had just cost the store a sale of X thousand dollars, and that never again would that store get any of your money.. Then, they would escort you out..and not look back..

Libby's right. Contact the manager or owner.

A friend of mine says the same thing. If she wants good service, she dresses up and remains aloof. They swarm to her.

I would be sure the manager or store owner knew exactly which salesman it was and that they had lost a customer.

I had a simular thing happen several years ago at a McRae's store. I went in to purchase a bedspread they had advertised on sale. I had just got off work and was dressed in old jeans and a t-shirt. But why drive 25 miles home to change and go back when I passed right by the store. I spent 30 minutes digging through the bedspreads that were on sale trying to find a king-sized one while the saleswoman ignored me. Of course she ran to every woman that came in dressed in an expensive skirt and jacket and looked like they'd just left the Clinique counter. I finally walked out and went to a store down the mall from there and found a spread for almost the same price. They were glad to help. I told them about the other store. Now I wish I'd said something to that uppity woman. Now that I'm older, I'm more likely to in the future.

I got an e-mail from the furniture store that turned us away...I was told they counsel their sales people to prejudge their clients...hhhmmmmm....must be nice to be able to do that....well...like I told'em in a return e-mail...they lost thousands of dollars worth of business..not to mention the fact that I will tell EVERYONE I come across about the way they treat people.

Maybe they think they're avoiding wasting time, but I still agree they are wrong. My DH tells a great story about a young, single guy he knew who had a very high income and only himself to spend it on. When he went car shopping they treated him as a waste of time, assuming he was too young to have any $ to spend. He went to another dealer, then drove his new expensive sports car to the first dealership to show them what idiots they were.

My experience with people who have a lot of $ is many are unwilling to spend it and try to get discounts or simply don't pay when the bill comes. You can't predict who is going to spend, or pay up, based on appearance.

Wouldn't that be considered discrimination????

Recently I decided to buy a new car and went to a dealership that sells only that make(Mazda). I am female, not young, and dress very casually. When I entered the show room the only person in sight was leaning back in a chair almost horizontally with a phone held to his ear and his feet up on a desk. I didn't expect him to terminate his call but I did expect acknowldgement of my presence---a nod or a hand wave---but was completely ignored. While I was wandering around looking at the cars on the floor another man came out of his office, went over to the first fellow and left something on his desk and then went back to his room without even looking in my direction.
I decided to leave and slowly walked towards the door thinking that one or the other might make a move but neither did.
I thought car salesmen, working on commission, were like vultures waiting to pounce on anything that moved. Not these two! Somebody should remind them that one should never judge by appearances .
