Has anyone ever sewn pants for bicycling? I just got a new bike that I love to ride but my rear would be a lot happier if a had more than one pair of pants with the extra padding. I have a hard time finding them that fit as I am very short and round.
I have never sewn with Lycra. Is it worth the effort? I am going on an internet search to find a pattern right now. Might not even be possible if I can't find a pattern.

OK pattern choices are few and far between.

Has anyone used Stretch and Sew patterns?
https://www.gmidesign.com/stretch/home.html
They have one but I am always worried about buying patterns from unknown companies.

I made a few of them a few years ago, but I don't remember putting in the extra padding, and I can't remember which company had the pattern but it was likely one of the big four or Kwik Sew. I'll try to have a look this weekend for you, to busy right now to get caught in the sewing room.

Pudge Stretch & Sew patterns have been around for quite a few years. I wouldn't be hesitant to order from them.

woodywoodpecker,
You said one of the big four or Kwik Sew. Who do you consider the big four? Simplicity, Butterick and who else? My brain has locked up and I can't think of any others.

I consider McCall's, Simiplicty, Butterrick and Vogue the big four. They have been around ever since I can remember and that's along time lol.

Hi Gina,
I made my son "Mr Big name Labels" follower bike shorts about 3 years ago I used Kwik Sew pattern it had great instructions and the fit was good AND he likes them and still wears them - he likes to mountain bike
I am sorry I cant give you the pattern number but we had flood in our office during a severe storm 3 weeks ago and my patterns are still all packed away until the decorators get here.

Thinking laterally here, why not buy a big squishy gel saddle for the bike? I'm sure not every solution is sewn/crafted/knitted/glued by us!

Thanks Skye,

I have seen the one from Kwik Sew. They only have a men's pattern. My curves are too ample to even try to squeeze them into a pair of men's shorts :bluewink:

Magot,

Got the gel seat already. But I still need the extra pad, the good ones are chamois. I don't want to get to graphic but if you ride a lot without a good pad in your shorts your gonna end up with diaper rash.

I obviously don't cycle enough then! Can I recommend a good bum cream? (I nearly said nappy cream but I don't think it means the same here, napkin=diaper)
Most I have managed is 20k or so and it's my hips that give out before my bum.

Hey Magot,
I wish I could get my hands (or bum) on some good European bum cream. We lived in Germany for three years and they had the best stuff I have ever used. I believe it was Bubchen Wundshutz. Forgive my spelling those German words kill me sometimes.
I don't ride long distances but I ride twice a day in this grewling Texas heat/humidty. I need something that wicks the moisture away.

I have made many pairs of bike shorts for my bike riding family. Green pepper has the best bike shorts pattern. They also have the tights. For padding fleece works. But the best thing I found and I can't find the name of the company was this shami they sell at the fair. It is from a company in Hawaii and it thick and absorbs well. Hint to putting in the pad. I found that placing the area you want the padding over a curved area (such as a ball or globe) and pin the padding in place over the curve. This puts the padding in the right place. This is the hardest part of making them. Other wise it is breeze. The lycra is easy to sew. I didn't have a serger when I started making them and I just used a zig zag stitch on my sewing maching and it works well.
Green pepper also has a great jersy pattern as well. I cut down the pattern for the boys when they were small and made dad-and sons matching outfits.
My boys are now 30 and 25 and live in other states and countries so I haven't made any for some time now.

I've used both the Green Pepper unisex and the Kwik Sew patterns. Unfortunately the women's Kwik Sew has been discontinued. I have seen it listed on eBay once but did have to inform the seller that the pattern was for bicycle shorts/top. I've seen Green Pepper patterns at JoAnn's and if you are on their flyer list, you do get 40% off coupons regularly.
I've also ordered visited some Canadian websites carrying outerwear/active wear fabrics & patterns

I'm not sure but I think www.timmelfabrics.com carries Green Pepper patterns.

She's Canadian, NAYY.

Try Jalie patterns -- I'm almost positive they have one.

Hi

I liked Kwik Sew's fit - it was pattern # 1733 long sleeved bicycling top and shorts. The Green Pepper instructions are better for replicating off the rack but are unisex. I did find that a Stretch & Sew pants (jeans) pattern I made up fit me about as well as KS on the first try. The Green Pepper has how to make the pad and I think they suggested polypropolene--you'd want something that pads and wicks away moisture.

I just found both Jalie patterns and justmakeit.com/patterns/daisykingdom.html that had bicycle and skiing pants patterns. Better yet, the justmakeit site has them for ridiculous prices--$3-$5 Canadian, which is cheaper when you convert to US! I've ordered two patterns from them, so we'll see how they work.

Just found out that Kwik Sew has bicycling patterns in one of their books. I am going to Hancock tomorrow to see if they have it.
