I haven't done any embroidery for a long time so having to make an Elizabethan costume for my daughter meant I could get to play with blackwork on the collar of her parlet ( a sort of over shift under bodice shirt thing with stand up collar and ruff) I made a blackwork band to go around the collar from an elizabethan style pattern and a small design to put down the front closures. I'm pleased that's for sure. It was very theraputic!

I can't work out how to do a proper holbein stitch so that it looks the same front and back. I know it's basically a running stitch done in 2 directions but do you have to keep fastening off all the tine to do a different element of the stitch? I have tended to use 32 count linen. 1 thickness of silk and backstitch. This means I have to applique the band onto the garment and it is not truely reversable. A good ruff should be reversable and only worked on a selvedge edge. So for a normal neck that would require 3m of linen! A bit expensive!

I'm no expert but if you are trying to do a running stitch cant you take it over and under in one direction then come back filling in the blanks in the other direction? Doesn't seem like a back stitch would look very good on the underside.

Yes that's the way to do it, the backstitich is a regular medusa nest -but it is when you have a complicated fill trying to work out an ergonmic way of going around the pattern - easier shown than read I think!
