Hi iam a new member to this forum. nice to meet you all. Iam a biginner in sewing and i will be taking a sewing class in next few days. I don't have machine and i need your help to choose one. I will use that to stitch simple garments and i won't use that for a long time. so i don't need an expensive one. Can anyone help me choose a good machine? thanks in advance.

I have a Kenmore model #38518330 and have been very happy with it. I also bought one at a garage sale and it worked really good. I gave it to my daughter. Sewing machines can be a matter of preference and of course cost. That is why I bought this one.

Visit the dealers in your city.. Lots of times they have perfectly good machines that have been traded in for a new one with more bells and whistles.. Some dealers will even give the same guarantee as on a new machine.. Don't get the very bottom of the line.. get one with a few extra features.. If you are going to make garments, it needs to make good buttonholes (and make them simply).. of course straight, zigzag, and stretch stitches.. (stretch if you plan to sew on any knit fabrics).. I think a beginner should stick with a good dealer, so that you get help when you need it.. I know sears sells a good machine (Kenmore) but sears sales people do not know how to sew, they are just sales people.. That is my opinion.. I have bought a Kenmore in the past.. It is a good machine, (30 years old, now it lives at DIL's house) but I knew how to sew very well when I bought it..

Some dealers will not only guarantee used machines they have services but may give classes on how to use the machines (not sewing classes but machine classes) and they also may allow trade-in allowances should you at some future date decide to trade up.

Hi, I am also new to sewing. I have been to the library for resource material- videos and books. I try to watch pbs sewing programs, and I have scoured the web for tips and techniques and resource info on sewing. I bought a viking serger last winter and soon realized i needed a sewing machine. I have a very old vintage machine and could not get it adjsuted so i looked on ebay. however, ebay does not warrantee any products- and you have to consider shipping costs- so i went to the pfaff and viking dealers to look at trade ins. The pfaff dealer did not offer classes, but the viking dealer offered free classes, discounts and lots of support. They also had a nice 'beginner' machine that was very reasonable, and should I decide to trade 'up', I will get reimbursed for my machine as long as I take care of it! So look for a Viking dealer near you!
