Today I went to yard sales and to a thrift store. I found an old yellow chenille bedspread at the thrift store for $10. It's in good enough shape to use as a spread, but I'm still thinking of making something else out of it. At yard sales I found an old white chenille bedspread for $2. It's has one worn spot but is perfect for recycling. I found some vintage patterns from the 50's and 60's for 10 cents each. I'm thinking about framing them for my sewing room wall. Not sure how I'll do it yet. I found bits of trim and lace at one yard sale where everything was $1 for all you could stuff in a bag. I also found a sage green sweater there with silk ribbon flowers on it that I thought would be pretty made into a pillow. When I got home my mom called. She had been to yard sales too and bought me a box full of fabric for $5!!!! There's at least 20 yards of fabric in it! Alot of it is 2 1/2 yard pieces!! |

My girlfriend and I looked at the phone book to pick out FABRIC shops... We went 5!!! I was quite proud of myself when I really did not buy any fabric just to buy fabric LOL LOL at the first 4 stores and 6 hours later.. that is SO not like me... BUT it was that dang 5th store.. Bernina in Raleigh... that DID it for me... !!! I picked up the beautiful quilted fabric in reds, greens, yellows and purple that I needed it... for a jacket!!! Then.. I saw those "red hat" fabrics.. that I just needed to purchase that for a christmas gift idea I have for my mature woman buddies... Bought a pattern that will make a cute little money purse. I will make them for stocking stuffers.. Yepp... that was my garage sale for the day of course Bama I spent much more that $5.00 Heck.. you can not take it with you right???? Karen Karen

Bama, I have seen bunnies and teddy bears made from old chenille. they were really cute too. Karen, I love those red hat fabrics. I think every store in Halifax has a corner dedicated to the red hat, purple boa trend. MaryW

Mary.. I love the entire idea... I purchased a panel which has 8 pictures with different little sayings on them... Of course all related to the sagging breast and the weight gain Then I purchased another piece of fabric with only the "red hats" on a ecro (sp) background.. which will be my backing... Some will become "Pillows" and some will be a little wall hangings.. I just LOVE them.... I am considering going back into that 5th store and getting yet another couple of yards and making my self a blouse to be PROUD of wearing.... I have to go sew now... Karen Karen

Mary, I've made teddy bears, rabbits, and lambs from chenille before. I love the way they look. So soft and cuddly. I've seen snowmen made from white chenille. Very cute. karebear, what pattern did you get to make the money purses? Is it a small one that you wear like a necklace? I saw some like that at a quilt show and thought they were so pretty. After closer inspection of the box of fabric that my mom got me, it has 35 yards of fabric in it!! There's alot of Daisy Kingdom prints of "Animal crackers" and "Noah's Ark". The rest of the fabrics coordinate with it- a border print, dots, stars, ticking stripes, and some solids. There was also a pattern for a nursery set in the box. Whoever had it must have planned to do a whole nursery and never got around to it. We have a niece expecting a baby in January. I won't do a whole nursery, but maybe a quilt and one more project. I'll have plenty left over for other projects. Now I just need more time. |

Bama.. the wallet measures 4-1/4 x 3. One fat quarter will make 2 of these little cuties.. if cut properly... But I picked it up because it was practical and I can get to use some of those fat quarters I have. WOW... your garage sale brought in the GOLD MINE for fabric... that is wonderful.. Yes we need more time to spend with pins and needles rather than just sitting on them... Also Bama... keep safe and dry as I think I remember hearing that Frances is coming your way.... Karen Karen

Well I took my treasure hunt to the garment district in New York and found my winter coat. A 100 percent wool, tiny houndstooth, teal and black with a great lining that has a 1940s type lady drinking a martini printed all over it. It was $6 a yard, but "for you $5." I also picked up enough sand colored wool crepe for a big warm shawl for fall, some silk linen blend (for you $7) a rayon print for $2 a yard and silk tussah (for you $6). Then my husband ran out of patience. And I got to see my daughter too. I love that place. Dorothy |

Karebear, the wallet sounds neat. I love projects that use fat quarters. Frances has not reached here yet, but we did get alot of breeze today and a little sprinkle. looks like we'll get the heavier stuff tomorrow. Dorothy, Are you going to use a pattern for your shawl? I made one once from fleece, but I felt like I looked huge in it. I should have used something with more drape I guess. |

Bama, I have an old Vogue pattern that I used once to make my daughter's friend a shawl that looks nice. It's not jus a straight piece -- more like a rectangle poncho that is open in the front. It stays on better than just a straight shawl. It is large. I think I will make mine even a bit larger since I plan to wear it for warmth not show. Dorothy |

Dorothy, that lining sounds great! Those prices are just plain unbelieveable. Silk linen, you will never find such an animal here. Count your blessings lady. MaryW

Hey Karen, that pattern you bought to make small purses, was it a storebought one( simplicity, butterick? etc?) or was it a personal pattern? Just curious, it sounds like a cute idea for my fall and winter craft shows, and LORD knows I have tons of fq's. Would you mind sharing the pattern?

Bama, I just checked out a book at the Library and it is called Sewing with Vintage Linens and it is written by: Samantha McNesby. It has 30 projects made from vintage linens like chenille and it is so wonderful! It has a rag quilt made in it with chenille! It is great! It cautioned though that if you do a rag quilt with chenille, that is thick, it might be easier to mark with a marker then cut your squares rather than use your rotary cutter. Said it was difficult to use a rcutter for this if it is thick. The pic of it is gorgeous! It is a baby rag chenille quilt. Speaking of libraries, friends you need to check out your local library for quilt books! I could not believe how many quilt books our local library had! It is a treaure indeed to stop in and check them out! I was on another forum one night and somebody suggested this book and while our local library did not have it, they were so kind to get it for me from another library! It is a wonderful book! Congratulations on your gold mine you found! It is great to find those at yard sales. One of the best gifts to give a child/grandchild is your listening ear.

Hi oklahomanana, I checked out that book a few weeks ago. I LOVE that book. I made a chenille rag quilt. I used a rotary cutter, but cut only one square at a time. It worked okay, but was pretty messy. I also made some star shaped chenille Christmas ornaments. I want to make an ottoman like the one in the book. And some pillows from chenille and old linens. There's so many great ideas. I checked out another book with some great ideas. It's called "Shabby Chic". (like the HGTV show) I can't remember the author but there's alot of good ideas in that book too. I think there's a second Shabby Chic book too. I love our library, but I think I've seen most of their quilting books now. I wish they would get some new ones. |

If I can ever figure out how to put a picture in a post. In the mean time I can email you a pic if you'll send me a private message with your email address. Do you have any projects planned from that book? |
