Okay, I have at least 3 more rag quilts planned to make by Christmas. I don't think my hands can take much more snipping of seams with regular scissors. Even though they are sharp, it still hurts my hand. I saw some type of scissors or snips sold especially for snipping through several layers of fabric at time such as in rag quilts. Now I don't remember where I saw them.
Help!!!
Thanks!!

I've only made a few rag quilts and other items, but I understand the tired hand part. I saw some special snips in the Keepsake Quilting catalog and on the web site that look a lot like garden snips. They supposedly cut through layers of even denim. But... I just bought a pair of 'ergonomic' spring action snips made by Fiskars. I'm going to do a denim quilt soon and hope they snip the problem in the bud!

Bama, don't kill your hands over these quilts. I have the Fiskars with spring loaded handles and they help a lot. I haven't used anything else, but after snipping a quilt, it hurts a lot!

Bama, i have the spring loaded Fiskars that look like pruning shears, and they are wonderful for doing the snipping of the rag quilts and alot easier on the hands than regular scissors, maybe that will be one of my first projects this winter!!! i have all the flannel just need time to get things done!!! :bg: :bg:

Bama, Hi. I am new to the forum but I just read your question about the scissors and I have the friskars snippet ones and LOVE THEM. They are made just for rag quilts! They are a little pricey around 22.00 but if you have your 40% coupon for Joann's you can get them for less. I just taught my twin to rag quilt and she loves her too. They are great! I did quilts before without them and I would not want to go back to that. They are wonderful to use for rag quilting. My hands loved them too!

Bama,
I went to Michaels yesterday , Holiday , you know and had a 50 % coupon burning a hole in my pocket, so I bought the new Fiskars Micro-tips or whatever they call them.. With the great big comfy handles and no spring to contend with.. So much better than the original micro-tip ones were,(with the bad spring that kept rubbing a raw spot on my finger) These have big, loopy handles that are soft, so they will not cause as much pain after prolonged snipping of rag quilt seams... and of course half of $ 14.98 is a great price .. :bg: :bg: :bg:

Thanks ladies! I'm going to try to go get those Fiskars this weekend. :bolt:

I posted last night, but it seems to have disappeared. :nervous: Oh well.

I can't remember if I've mentioned it anywhere here before, but I found some hot pink denim to make a rag quilt for my daughter. That should look unique.

Oklahomanana,
A big welcome from me too.

Thanks for the warm welcome MaryW and Patsy!
I live in Hobart, Okla. It is 2 hrs from you Patsy. We drive to OKC 2 times each month. WOW Nice to find a quilting friend close. :bluewink: Do you know where Lawton is? I am 1 hr west and north from there. Little town of about 2500 I guess. Sorry I did not get back to replying but I just remembered I had posted a reply to this thread and had not gotten back to it. This is a nice thread to be in, I have learned so much just from reading others posts. So nice we can all learn something from each other. I just taught my twin to do a rag quilt and she sent me a pic today. It is beautiful. She asked me how do you know how much fabric to buy to start your stash, and I said well I will tell you like I was told: If you like it buy two yards, love it buy 3 or 4 yds and if you feel like you cannot live without it, buy the whole bolt! She said oh I am going to buy the whole bolt then of red flannel! LOL! She is a hoot to be around and we have such a wonderful time together! She can literally pass the white glove test on her houses she cleans! beats me all to pieces! Sometimes my DH says the farmers would be envious of my dust and dirt! LOL! I say housework whenever and crafts forever! I have a neat house (being just my DH and myself.) but I do not worry about all the dust everyday life brings in. I get it done, but quilts come first! LOL! If you want to see some of my quilts go to" http://community.webshots.com/user/oklahomanana and see them. Have a wonderful day! Dorene Hope to hear back from ya.
