I'm new to the forum (sorta - I've lurked as a guest off and on for awhile), and thought I'd post my first question, now that I broke down and registered. I just ordered some pretty silly looking fleece from a co-op, and I've decided to make my dog and myself matching jackets (don't have the heart to do that to my kids). I have his pattern. I'm not as certain about mine. I ordered the Jalie 2319 pattern, but it's gotten somewhat mixed reviews on www.patternreview.com. Does anyone have a really clear favorite for a zippered hoodie pattern? TIA, Yak I spy something that starts with 'S'... Swap!

Hi Yak, I am new to the board (this is my first post!) and just started sewing again after 15 odd years! I dug out my old Singer sewing machine and decided to start something simple to try and remember everything I had forgotten ha! So I made a fleece jacket. I am absolutey thrilled with it. Choose a multi coloured (multi scene) polar fleece and the pattern came free with the book More Polar Magic by Nancy Cornwell. It was so easy to construct, and fits lovely. Of course, my Mum...my son..my husband ALL want one now ha! Baash |

Sorry...meant to finish with Bashfully yours, Hockeymum. Hit the send button too soon ha! If I knew how to upload a photo of the jacket to you, I would. Its nice and long, so covers the important parts while sitting in a hockey rink ha! Not so bashfull now Hockeymum |

Sorry....this is the first thing I have made in about 15 years....I just knew I wanted polar fleece....went to Walmart and picked some up. I have not tried washing it yet (I know you are suppose to prewash your fabric...I don't!) and have only worn it twice, so can't really help you here. Cheers |

Blackie, I just got my Joann's flyer and the anti-pill fleece is on sale starting the 19th for 50%off. The Joann's here has the tables piled high with all sorts of fleece in all colors and prints.

HockeyMom, I never pre-wash my fleece have never had a problem yet. I agree this polar fleece stuff is great to work with and so forgiving for matching seams. I even embossed some and it looked great, of course the omre washings it had the more it disappeared. I think next time I'll try putting some stablizer behind it and see if that will work(on a sample first of course). |

Blackie, I usually order form Wazoodle (http://www.wazoodle.com/). They carry both Malden Mills and Yukon. I have been extremely pleased with both. You can also order directly from Malden Mills at their online retail store (http://www.maldenmillsstore.com/goshopping.asp?id=0412360024282387309187). If you haven't yet heard of Wazoodle, let me be the first to highly recommend them. LeeAnne is wonderful and willing to help in any way possible with your order. The knits on this site are also fabulous. I order the grab bags quite frequently and they are scrumptious NAYY, just a satisfied customer! |

Embossing on fleece--- okay here goes. When you have a fabric that has a nap on it like fleece or velvet you can make an impression on it. What I do is have a rubber stamp ( or something with a raised surface) that can stand some heat, put the stamp face up on the ironing board and spray with a little water, then I lay my fabric right side down in the position I want the image, and spritz with some more water and then put my iron on top of that and hold it for a count of 10 or so and presto you have an embossed fabric. If you have steam outlets in your iron they could also show up so it would be better to use one with no steam holes. On the other hand you could give the fabric an extra shot of steam when you are embossing. I was thinking if I had a velvet board that maybe I could put interfacing on after I embossed that would hold the design so it wouldn't wash out with time. I did some embossing on a fleece hat and sweater and have washed it about 4-5 times and the image is still there just not as crisp. So there you have it in a nut shell. It really looks nice on velvet but would likely come out with dry-cleaning. |

Just a note of caution on Wazoodle -- they will not take any returns of fabric which most of the online stores will. Don't get me wrong, I love their stuff, but I buy a lot online now, and need that return feature. Also, the MM (Malden Mills) site usually has something on sale. nancy |

According to the pawprints.com site, you need to use velvet that is mostly rayon. I've done this and think it's very classy -- and it doesn't come out in dry cleaning. It won't work well w polyester velvet or cotton velveteen. nancy |

You can emboss on slinky too. See here. http://www.timmelfabrics.com/garments.htm See the Lugano Jacket by Loes Hinse by Brenda Boudreau. She embossed, then beaded. Awesome! MaryW

Just a quick hint for all the polar fleece lovers - wash the garments inside out and they will not pill hardly at all, even the cheap ones will not pill too bad. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

Also, do not use liquid fabric softener with fleece or knits as it causes pilling big time. Patsy Patsy

In the same vein as a polartec hooded sweatshirt, on page 55 in a Fall 2004 Lands End catalog is a sweatshirt robe. I would like to make one out of polartec for my daughter. Since I am really new to this, could I modify a sweatshirt pattern. Any suggestions? I plan to order fabric from Malden Mills. Since we have to go to Tucson to get to a Joann Fabrics, I will look there also. Thanks for any help. |

I have Kwik Sew's Sewing for Children book and it gives all sorts of ideas and directions for changing the pattern pieces to be used for other items of clothing. Example: I'm making one of my grandchildren a polar fleece jacket that is made from the sweatshirt pattern with alterations for a zipper front, hood and elastic waist. All the directions for how to do the changes are in it. I couldn't begin to explain or even give the dimensions for you for an adult size. I alter if I have the directions, but not very talented when it comes to making changes from children to adult sizes.

Sonora Shepherd, check out kwik sew book Sweatshirts unlimited, when I read Sewing Grandma's reply to you I remembered there was also a book for Adults sweatshirts that gives all the pattern changes as well. They are terrific books and you should be able to do want you want with out any problem. |

Hello Hockeymum: I am fairly new to this site, but have found the Berber fleece very good with no pilling and no pre-washing. I have also found the Polar fleece to be good but after many washings it can show a slight amount of pilling. I have made quite a few items for myself, my granddaughters and the rest of my family. All have lasted and washed well over the years with no pilling. Just for fun, try making a bathrobe out of it. It is truly great, it keeps you warm. |

Polarfleece never has to be prewashed (it's 100% polyester), and Malden Mills says to wash inside out on gentle (no softeners), and shake and hang to dry. This keeps the velour-like softness -- otherwise, if you put it in the dryer, it eventually takes on a different texture that I don't know how to describe, but it's not as snuggly as the non=dried stuff. (Ask me how I know!) nancy |

I have a pattern for a very nice looking fleece jacket. It is from www.greatcopy.com patterns. It is called the funnel collar serger coat. No facings, no lining. Just serge the edges with woolly nylon. You can finish this in a day easy. I am making one now.

Thanks, Mary. My husband helped me with that...I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. It feels kind of weird to see my face staring back at me, though Be sure to report back on your jacket! I would love to see a picture. What colour fleece are you using, and are you using matching thread, or an accent colour? Take care,

Hey Donna, Glad to see your face. I thought it weird seeing my face everytime I answered a post I had posted on previously but you get use to it. I just ignore it now. LOL I made a fleece jacket in Sept and love it so I bought another one for my hubby with a hood. My good friend bought a pattern when I bought mine for my hubby and she got as far as sewing up the sleeves and front to back and brought the patten, fabric, thread and scaps over to me and told me I could have it she didn't like the way it fit. SOOOO I got another fleece jacket out the deal. LOL I love them. So soft. Joanne's here has lots of fleece on sale now and so does Hancock Fabric. Good deals on anti pill too. Wish I had more time to sew for me. I just love making ME clothes. |
