I know I'm not supposed to use my nice fabric shears for cutting paper, but is it okay to use them to cut patterns? Thanks! Mischka |

Use the old ones for the paper when possible. But who am I to talk. I've been seen cutting newspaper clips with my good shears. Dorothy |

I am bad. The truth is I really only use scissors to clip threads and trim seams and the like. I buy fairly cheap ones and when they are dull I get new ones. To cut out garments and the like I use a rotary cutter with disposable blades. I know I should buy a really good pair of shears and treat them like gold but well like you said, Bad Me. Dorothy |

You can use cheap scissors from an office supply store for paper. |

Good answers - and I'll try not to become like Dorothy J/K To investigate this further...The book I'm using most (Sewing 101) shows that they've cut out the pattern pieces, but just around the piece, not on the lines. Then they pin it to the fabric, and cut on the lines for the desired size. Is this a good way to cut pieces? i.e. that way I'll know my fabric pieces exactly match my pattern pieces. Or is it just a good way to abuse my nice shears? |

There is ;no need to do double work, if you are cutting exactly on the pattern lines, then do it all in one step.. (pattern and material)..But, let that be the only time you ever use your sewing scissors for paper ! ! !
