anyone know where I can find a pattern for a buttoned shirtdress with cap sleeves and a flared skirt for (hopefully) less than $10?

Simplicity has the pattern that you are looking for. It was created for the American Sewing Guild. Hancock Fabrics frequently run the patterns for 99 cents. Happy Stitching!

eek! I just went to a fabric store for the first time in several years and I was really horrified at the prices they are asking for patterns. EEEEEEEEEEK!
Are they kidding? They're outrageous! I can make a whole season's wardrobe for the price of one pattern alone!

The 99 cent sale pattern sounds like a very good idea. Another way is to do what I do--look through your pattern drawer and find a pattern that is close and modify it. Take your sleeve out, cut three or more deep cuts in the curved part of the sleeve, spread out to achieve the puff you want. Pin this spread pattern to a piece of tracing pattern paper, or take the bottom off a brown paper grocery bag, cut the side, iron out flat, and use that. Take out the skirt pattern, slash, spread until you get the desired flare, then trace that off. I use newspapers if I have to and trace the pattern with a child's purple wax crayon.

I'm derned if I will use up my sewing money on a pattern that I really already have if I only think creatively!
