Are you talking about making the quilt top itself, or just the backing? If it's just the backing, you could buy 6 yards of 44" wide material, cut it into two 3 yard pieces, and sew them together side by side.

If it's the quilt top you're talking about, then it depends on what pattern and how many different colors you're using.

If you want 6" finished squares, you would be using 6 1/2" cut squares, sewing a 1/4" seam. In order to accomodate the size you are looking at, you would need to make a quilt 14 blocks wide by 16 blocks long.

Depending on how many different colors you wanted, I would buy 7 1/2 yards of material. If you wanted six colors, you could buy them in lengths of 1 1/4 yards. These would each be cut into seven 6 1/2" strips. You would cut the strips into squares 6 1/2" x 6 1/2".

If you wanted the quilt to be the exact size of 82 x 92, you could make a quilt 13 squares across by 15 squares long and then add 2" borders (cut 2 1/2 inches) all around. This would actually make the quilt 82 x 94 (close!)

I hope I'm not confusing you further! I'm sure there are people here who could explain it a little easier.
