Since my hubby got a house dog I've been tucking flat sheets around the sofa and loveseat cushions to help keep them clean. I remove them when we're expecting company. When I changed them today it hit me that I should make some simple slipcovers so it would look better and stay on better. I thought about making something similiar to a cribsheet, with elastic at the corners. That would be alot easier to change every day or two instead of a slipcover that would cover the whole cushion. I could make 2 or 3 sets. I need opinions. How would that look? Would they stay on okay? I already have the perfect fabric to match my furniture. I even have a lap quilt made from some of it. |

Bama good idea. Only thing that I could think of is to make sure that the edges go under the cushion further than a mattress. I was trying to picture it and thought if you sit on a mattress it is firmer so the cover will stay put but a sofa cushion is softer with more give and they might slip off faster. Make sure the elastic is good and tight with about 6" that goes under the cushion. Does this make sense to you? hope so. Do you have a throw and then put the cushions on top? Or are you just covering the cushions? |

Hi shirley, I'm just covering the seat cushions. That seems to be the only part that gets puppy fur on it. My couch and loveseat are a solid color with big throw pillows on the back that have a rose and vine pattern on them. I have a rose print fabric that's the same color as the roses on the pillows. I'm glad you reminded me to have plenty of fabric wrapped underneath. Should I put elastic just on the corners, like most fitted sheets, or should I put it all the way around? I'm also trying to decide if I should make a separate cover for both seat cushions (sofa and love seat each have 2 seat cushions) or if I should make one that stretches over both cushions. hmmmmm..... the puppy likes to hide toys in the couch, so I guess that might be a problem... |

How about something like a large pillowcase and you just fold the open edge under. I think it would look neater and you'd have the option of flipping to the other side to get an extra day or two of wear. Another option is the style of pillow cover that has an opening where two pieces of fabric are slightly lapped over each other so you can slide the cushion in and the edges stay in place. Maybe someone knows what I mean and knows of an illustration. For the fitted sheet idea I'd make it so the opening ends up as small as possiblem maybe with a draw cord in addition to , or instead of the elastic, to really hold it taut. |

Hey Bama, Stitchmds idea of a draw string might just work better. You can lay the pillow on it and just pull tight. No fussing with straighting the pillow case with the elastic. If I'm right You are trying to keep dog hair off the couch. Flipping over puts hair on the sofa. Stichmd I know the pillow you are talking about. It would make the slipcovers look really nice. Where you overlap the fabric and just slip the cushion in. Bama if you are going for a quick fix, drawstring and elastic are good ideas. As for doing just the corners or the whole cover with elastic I think that is a matter of preference. |

Thanks ladies. I think I'll try the drawstring. I have my fabric washed and ready to sew. I hope this will solve the puppy on the furniture problem. I'm really tired of straightening out those sheets. |
