Ok girls, Wednesday I switch to phase 2. Can I please have some bread or potato? Are the portions small or am I allowed yet?

This has been so hard getting to this point. Very difficult especially when I want a sandwich or I can smell the bananas sitting on the dining room table or I hear hubby munching away on chips.

I am going to love having fruit.

Mary,
You can have whole grain bread. You can have brown rice. You can have whole wheat pasta. You can never ever ever eat a potato again.
Yeah, you can eat a single small potato once in a while.
Just avoid high carb and high fat whenever you can. I really think the fat is worse than the carbs.
You are finished dieting. Now you change the way you eat for life.
You can have some fruit too.
You can have semi-sweet chocolate. Yes chocolate, chocolate, chocolate.
And you can have a glass of wine for dinner!!!
You can have oatmeal for breakfast.
I hit 28 pounds lost this morning and I had dinner at the Spaghetti Factory this weekend. I chased the lady with the bread away from the table and only ate a little of my pasta. I think I'm beginning to prefer the whole wheat.
I'm going to sneak a potato into the soup tonight too.

Dorothy, can I have sweet potato?

I am not doing too badly. I have oatmeal  for breakfast and some little snack. Then for lunch I have cold meat with tomato and cucumber slices. Then a piece of fruit for snack and dinner. I'm really watching the bread and potato situation. I've lost about 5-7 lbs. in 3 wks. Sometimes I think I can see a difference around my tummy. Other times nah.

I want to lose another 20 lbs.

Yes Mary Yes
You can have all the sweet potatoes you want. Have you tried the whole wheat pasta? It's not bad at all.
Today I found some low carb chips. It's very hard not to eat the whole bag.
When faced with the decision I choose carbs over fat.
It's slow going, but it works.

Yep, don't mind the whole wheat pasta at all. None of us did so that is what will be in my kitchen from now on. I am so glad about the sweet potato.

Bren --
First off, I'm so glad you are back
You can find the details of the diet if you go to the South Beach Diet site.
My husband and I have both been doing it for a few months now and both lost 30 or so pounds.
After the first two weeks (which are very Atkins like only you have to cut fat too) are hell. After that you just make some subtle changes in the way you eat.
It's a forever kind of change -- not a quick fix.
Basically you cut the carbs, calories and fat every chance you get. That sounds bad but it really isn't. I've found most recipes can be adapted.
Also instead of new low carb fad food we eat whole wheat instead of white flour pasta and bread and brown rice instead of white. And not with every meal.
We eat a lot more vegies than we used to.
The big thing is my daughter's diet plan-- when you sit down and look at food and say to yourself "I really shouldn't eat this" -- DONT!!

It is difficult for the first two weeks. No doubt about it but what diet isn't.

You have to want to do it or it won't work and you must have self discipline. I never dreamed I would be as diligent as I am.

Mary,
It gets habitual. And if you do screw up -- so what. There are no diet police. Just forget it and keep going.

Oh, I have definitely screwed up. Not in eating the wrong foods but in the amounts. Those portions get bigger and bigger.

What about juice and desserts, any recommendations?

This is 5 weeks now. I think I have lost 8-9 lbs. Not bad.

Mary --
We never worried a lot about portion size except to make the carbs and fat (even though they are good carbs like whole grain) smaller portions and the vegies larger. But now my husband and I find ourselves eating a lot less at a sitting.

For our birthdays -- both in Sept. -- we got ourselves a bo-flex. I had my first full workout this morning and I can feel a lot of pain coming on.
No pain no gain.
I expect to look like the govenator in no time.

A bow-flex. WOW!!! Would I like one of them.

I have a bicycle that goes nowhere right here in the bsmt. I better jump on that I guess.

But I think you are supposed to warm up with a few exercises, not go whole hog all at once. You will both be in pain and that will put you off from wanting to do anymore.

Dorothy, when is your birthday???

Mary --
I ride a bike to nowhere regularly. Sometimes I fell like I'm getting there really fast.
We also have a treadmill but I keep walking it off it's rollers.
Yeah, today I think I kinda over did the bo-flex thing.
My birthday is the same as yours.

Well, you sneak. Happy belated birthday Dorothy. I will remember this for next year. :bg:

Hubby bought us bikes so I will be out riding next week. Hopefully that will help a bit. I have lost 10 lbs. in 5 weeks.

Just remember, if Mary and I made it through the first two weeks you can do it too. It was a lot easier for me, I think, because my husband is on the diet too. I would have never made it through those two weeks without him. And I'm not sure I'd make it now if there was someone eating potatoes in the house.

I don't crave the potatos and bread like I used to. It is a test to see how well you can do but just think about it one day at a time. My loss is slow, but hey, I never dreamed I would get this far.

My husband is shocked to see me turn down desserts in a restaurant. That was about the only time I had them. I want to lose another 10-15 lbs.
If I do as well as I can every day then when a special occasion comes up, I can cheat a little and not feel guilty.

This coming weekend is our Thanksgiving, another test. All those pies. :re:

Mary --
It would be a crime against nature to lose weight at Thanksgiving.
Stop your whining.
Maybe you built up some new muscle ridding that new bike and since muscle is heavier than fat you lost weight and made up for it in strength. That is not a bad thing.
If you are that discouraged go eat a piece of chocolate cake. You'll feel better.

Well,
I wouldn't have made them if I wasn't going to eat them. I'm kinda stuck at 30 pounds but I'm all over that bo-flex and am already stronger.

Time to revisit the diet theme. Yeah, I know, who cares.

Well, I do. I have lost 15 lbs. with no exercise of any kind. I will lose more in the new year but for now the holidays are coming up fast and furious.

Does anyone have any fat free or carb free cookies. I love cookies and am determined to enjoy the holidays without eating my face off.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
