I am making a dress and I am going to eliminate the front and back facing to get rid of some bulk. This dress has a button with elastic cord for the fastner at the center back. I have stay stitched the neck edge, I have figured out how to put the elastic in at the top by folding the center back 5/8 " on each center back section above the dot and folding over on the neck edge beyond the stay stitching. Here is my question, do I fold over and stitch the neck and back edge now or should I be sewing together the shoulders seams first? One more thing about the shoulders, do I remember that I should be using some stay tape along the seam line of the shoulders? Can I serge that seam if I am using stay tape is or is it best to sew that one? I am making New Look 6208 , view F with all the different pieces.here (http://www.simplicity.com/design.cfm?designId=10889&design=6208) Thanks Jolene

I made on of those. I used cotton fabric for the facings. i would sew the shoulders first.
The more you disaprove, the more fun I am having!

Jolene, put the stay tape in. It will keep the shoulder line from stretching out of shape.

How cute! I love the piece work design. When you are finished, can you please post a picture? I'd love to see how it turns out!! I made 6 or so of these little fleece jumpers last year for my 4 year old daughter. She loved them. And I love how adorable, how easy, and how inexpensive they were to make! Honestly, because I was using fleece, I just pinking sheared the arm holes and the neck and then did some decorative twin needle stitching around them. I twin needled at the hemline, and then fringed below it. They turned out really well. And because I used fleece I purchased for $3.88/yd--They were very inexpensive to make. I am going to put this pattern on my list for this fall's sewing. These will make a nice addition to her winter wardrobe from last year. I just have to add some turtle necks and some warm winter boots and she will be set! |

You may also want to stabilize the neck opening so your fabric will not stretch out of shape. I would use either clear elastic or stay tape on the neck opening when you turn it under. Happy Stitching! Marty It takes one moment to change a life.

I always use the clear elastic when I put it in the shoulders. Less bulky then stay tape and it will stretch putting it on if necessary but bounces right back in place. I've never had a problem using it. Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.
