I am making a quilt for my sister's first baby, a girl. She will be painting the walls a very light blue that has a slight aqua tint to it. She has a yellow rocker and wants a crib set from Pottery Barn that is Hawaiian prints in pink. She wants an ocean theme, but nothing kitchy or too "babyish." The floor is a beige tile. I have been collecting fabrics without much of a plan. She wanted a quilt out of PB that had rectangulars and squares, plaids to floral to solid, some with a blanket stitch around the perimete.
How does one take all the details like this and put something complimentary together, or is this just a talent you must be born with??? My other quilts just "happened" but this one is driving me nuts! I am trying to plan ahead also for the quilting of it. It will be machine pieced, but not sure about the quilting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, except the kind that says, "Go buy it as Pottery Barn!" :re:

I made five memory quilts last yr and ran into the same problem. First I showed them a pattern and how I would put it together. When the pattern was decided, then I suggested how many colours were needed and then let them pick their own. Worked great. Everyone was happy.

Oh, Shirley that was my first, second and third approach, but my sister has changed her mind 3 times and she is in her 8th month! She can't be trusted to make a sain decision for awhile!! I can't think of any "quilty" friends here who have tastes I would choose for her either! ARGHHH!

Your really in a predicament. Maybe you will just need to be forceful. Tell her to decide or you won't get it done on time. Are you able to do this with her?

Maybe just tell her it will be a surprise and go for it. Add some of the colours you like that you thing might work.

Yeah, I got forceful and she caved! Said for me to pick it out but I am only able to pick out schemes that others put together and not my own from scratch! Wish I had some "condition" to call that, but its just plain old ignorance. I am ordering some books on "color" from our library to see if I can pick up any logic, but ultimately I suppose it'll have to come from the heart!

Sorry to interfere, but, yup. It will come from the heart. What colors do you see around your sister that soothe or please her. Take it from there.

My experience is that recipients all have all kinds of ideas and opinions, but end up being thrilled to death with whatever you decide on and do yourself.

Pregnant ladies are even worse! Do exactly what you want. Make it a twin size, because that baby is only going to be in the crib a short time and will soon graduate to a bed, and you don't want all your creativity and hard work packed in a drawer because it is then too small.

Marti,

You are definitely right! BTW, I got a kick out of your signature "YAYAMAMAMEX"! My daughter, Leņa, is "Yaya" to me, so it caught my eye!
