I have this skirt pattern that I like which is supposed to be cut on the bias. What do you think would happen if I cut it not-on-the-bias (how to do you even say that? "on the grain"?)? I have this tweed fabric and I want the pattern to go up and down rather than diagonally.
Thanks.
Have a great weekend.
PS I'll be sure to browse the ads if it'll help out. These forums have helped me out a LOT!

I am sure there must be a picture of your skirt. It will probably be draping beautifully, hanging nicely. If you cut your skirt on the straight of grain, it will not hang like that. It will not have the same appearance at all.

I think I would try another pattern rather than change to the straight of grain. What is it about the skirt you like? Is it a detail you can change or alter on another skirt?

If it's a very loose weave, drapey fabric it just might work, otherwise I agree the answer is no. It will stand out very stiffly and have a totally different shape and look. Surely you can find another pattern you like to suit the fabric's hand.

Thank you so much. That's what I figured. Incidentally, I made a "rough draft" yesterday, and I kind of liked how it flared out stiffly. It gave it a sort of retro look.
