Hello again.

I am making skirt with no waistband, just a facing on the inside. I would really like to add a lining this time, but I'm not sure how to attach it if there's no waistband.

Can I eliminate the facing alltogether and simply sew in the lining in its place? I'm afraid that the relative lightweightness of the lining will make the waistband curl in toward my body. Maybe I could reinforce the whole waistband area with some ribbon seam binding or something.

Thanks in advance.

Can you attach the lining to the facing? Or perhaps underline the fashion fabric? I often underline when the pattern is for an unlined garment. Of course it wouldn't hang loose at the hem.
Maybe you could attatch the lining at the top or the garment but let it hang loose from there, then add a facing that lays over the lining?

I just make a lining out of the skirt pattern and also use the facing. I sew the facing ( already seamed together) right on top of the right side of the lining, then trim the excess out from under the facing. I attach it as directed by the pattern. I do shorten up lining skirt by 2" and overedge the hem so it doesn't show.

You can also just make the lining and baste it at the top into the top of the skirt and then add the facing. The facing will hide the lining. If you just line the skirt and turn the lining inside it will show and it also won't have much body at the top so you won't be very happy with it. You really need the facing and interfacings there. Some companies use grograin ribbon there instead of facing to give it some body.

Also, make sure the lining is cut on the crossgrain of the fabric. This way, nothing stretches out of shape. :bg:

Last winter I made a moleskin (poly microfiber) without a waistband and used a novelty cotton lining rather than a facing. At the top I understitched just as I do facings for any other waistband or neck facing, etc. No problem with rolling or collapsing. It is made to fit snug down through the hips, though. The lining is not attached at the hem and no slip is necessary!
