This question was at the bottom of the Christmas Quilty projects thread, so I thought I would start a new thread.

Here are some sites for calendar patterns

Scroll down a bit. It's a little pricey but awfully cute

Lots of darling Christmas paper piece patterns to design your own advent calendar

You could adapt this one using fabric or felt

As I come across other sites, I'll post them.

I just got a new book, "simple fabric folding for Christmas" with a CUTE advent calendar pattern, it's just a folded square, with numbers above it. Look at the book, there are actually 2 different ones, one cute, one elegant. It looks relatively easy.

hope this helps.

Patsy I like this idea, just find a frame, put the calendar as shown then you can either put a quilt design on the top or family photos.

I have a question, having just joined this discussion. Has anyone ever seen an advent calendar that was biblically related? I remember having one when I was younger that someone had given us. We had 24 or 25 sacks to open, and in each sack there was a small prize (grape bubblegum, or candy cane or some small toy), and then a Bible verse or story to go with it from Christ's life, but the problem is that I don't remember what was in it at all. I vaguely remember getting grape bubblegum one time and reading the story of turning water to wine, oh and it ends with the Christmas story. But, that's it.
I'll have to remember to go out and look online, but I figured I'd ask first on the off chance someone had seen something like that.

Thanks, that actually inspired me to look at a few others, and so I think I have some ideas.
I think I'll have to be like Patsy and design my own, because none of the ones I saw are quite right (the problem being, of course that I'm going off a vague childhood memory, so it's not like anything would be right, so I'm really setting myself up for failure).
But, I really liked the felt ones with the pockets that had different characters from the nativity scene and you put them up one day at a time. I thought that was pretty cool. So, I'm wondering if I can somehow combine that with what I remember from childhood, maybe make it as a different story for each thing you add. I don't know, I'm just making this up.

Ticia, that would be easy enough. Go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby and buy little felt animals, a piece of felt to make your calendar out of. Sew little pockets in a row on this piece to fit the month of dec. You could also sew an extra pocket on the back to put the animals not in use for that day. Just take the story you want and print out little excerpts out of it then fold like an accordian and place on the pocked with a little treat for the kids. Hope this helps.

That's a good idea, I'll have to look into that. I'm going to have some definite thinking to do. Unfortunately, that just adds to the list of things I need to do.

I was interested in this book as I saw the HGTV show on the Halloween book that is not out yet. Put it on my wish list.... Is the Christmas version mostly folded ribbon? I was thinking of getting it but it looked like a lot of folded ribbon and silk ribbon is not something I can find locally - no Michael's around here...

Was curious what the book was like? Saw the folded triangle sewn into the squares on point on the back cover photo- clever and easy! What appealed to me about the halloween show.

No, sorry, meant to tell you, it's not ribbon, it calls for regular fabric, folded over...Looks easy.

Even better as fabric lasts longer!

The Love of Quilting Magaine has an advent calendar on pp. 116-117 in this months issue - just got it yesterday.

A simple tree with three strips of fabric sewn underneath and divided into 8 pockets on each strip and I think that may be some Werther's Original Candy in the pockets. The top edge of the pocket is turned under and hemmed but it looks super easy. The pockets dont get divided until you actually start quilting the project - saves time.
