Please leave your suggestions for this lady if you can help, thanks. HI, I just moved from NY to SC and am trying to set up a sewing/computer room. I took the second bedroom to do this but not quiet sure how to go about it to make things easier to find. I do have three thread holders to hang on the wall, much fabric but would not want to keep it in blue or see thru bins as it is so hard to get too. Are there such racks or something that would work for me. I may take the smaller room as it has a larger closet, then put shelves in it and try something there. Any ideas would be appreciated. MaryW

If you have a closet that can be remodeled with shelving that is the way to go. My DH is just getting started on remodeling the closet in my sewing room. That way, you can store much of your sewing notions, fabric, etc., out of site but in an organized way. Patsy Patsy

I just did my "new" sewing room this summer. I moved into my youngest daughter's old and (very small) bedroom. Here is a link to the pictures of the room. http://www.ofoto.com/ShareLandingSignin.jsp?Uc=falgy07.7p55lvv3&Uy=-941x16&Upost_signin=BrowsePhotos.jsp%3fshowSlide%3dtrue&Ux=0 You do not need to login to view, just press the button view photos. It has a small walk-in closet, which I hung all of my fabric stash on hangers and covered with garmet bags. I can walk in and look over my fabric. The dresser in the back holds smaller pieces of fabric and notions, interfacing, etc. I now labeled each drawer with it's contents. I've never has a sewing room this organized and am loving it. Of course I have been sewing in it now, so it is messy. Those pictures were taken when I was done setting it up. Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

Definitely go for the room w the closet. It's so easy to make a mess and so hard to make everything look OK to a non=sewer! FWIW, I'd vote for shelves in the closet instead of hanging. You can fit in MUCH more, and some fabrics stretch as they hang i.e. knits!! Take a look a the sewing room thread on patternreview.com for a ton of ideas. nancy |

Jessica, No I didn't install the carpet, as it was there when we purchased the house. It is made of carpet samples that they have at the stores. The person or persons who did this, somehow attached them. I left it down, as it reminded me of a quilt, and fit the theme of the room. I know they don't recommend carpet in the sewing room, because of the needles, but it is warm on the feet in the cold winters. As far as hanging your material, I did read this somewhere on the internet, but I can't remember where. I have some knits, I'll let you know if they stretch. The bags that I used were from a friend who works at a Wal-mart and these are what the hanging clothes are shipped in. They help keep the dust off of the material. I'm sure with shelving you could get more material in there, but this room is on the second level and the closet is under the eaves of the roof. So not much height in the closet. I have one wire shelf on the other side, that doesn't show in the picture, that I have some bolts of material on. Happy Sewing! Liz Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

Sailorliz, your room is super! That window is a good size too. A hook for hanging plants comes in handy. Put one in your ceiling and you can hang partially finished garments. Also, over the door hooks and hangars work for storing fabric, clear plastic shoe containers can hold notions, etc. I like it when I can see everything. I tack a lot of stuff on the walls trying to keep my floor at least partially clear. A magnet knife holder works for scissors, so do the expandable wooden coat hooks. I have clear plastic boxes for most of my fabric. I also have a 4 drawer bin on wheels next to my machines for patterns and interfacing. I have really cleaned out a lot of my patterns. No use in keeping them, so I donated them. I have as many for my grandsons clothes as I do for myself. I have an old flat utensil drawer in between my sewing machine and my serger. this holds most of the notions used regularly. Seam ripper, point turner, pins, paper clips. My cutting table is two levels. On the bottom level is all my sewing books and jars of notions like ribbon, buttons, weights, etc. I've got a board on the wall for spools and cones of thread. Also, we bought industrial shelving for holding fabric. I have 4 shelves full. I have an entire shelf for quilting and craft books. I didn't want them near the sewing books or they get mixed in together. Sometimes when I am in a hurry it happens. MaryW

Liz, The carpet reminded me of a quilt too I would have to have carpet too, Since my feet get really cold! My DH does not like to walk bare foot around my sewing room. One time a long time ago, when we first got hitched. I was sewing something, and dropped a needle. He came home from work and stepped on it. I could not pull it out if his foot , it was that painful. Right after that I got a pin tomato, and kept all my sharp needles & pins in it!

Jessica, Ouch!!! I have pin holders also, but I still manage to drop pins on the floor. I usually wear hard sole slippers in the sewing room, to help prevent sticking them into my foot. I have a similiar story to share. Back a few years ago, when my middle daughter was two years old, (she is now 24), she stepped on a round wooden toothpick that was on the carpeting of our dining room. It went right into the arch of her foot. I could not pull it out, as the bleeding caused the toothpick to swell. We had to take her to the hospital's emergency room, to have it removed!!! I keep a pair of sandals right inside the door to my room to slip on and off. I cannot stand to sew in shoes, soooooo when I use the machine I can slip out of the sandal and feel the pedal under my foot and slip right back into it to walk around. Helps save my feet from pins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I keep one of the magnitized wands in my sewing room to make a sweep of the floor (carpeted) periodically so that no one (not even the dog) picks up pins or needles unexpectedly. My little dog likes to come lay in the floor in my sewing room and I would really hate it if she picked up a pin or needle in one of her paws or stuck one in her whiile laying on the floor.
