are there any companies that make patterns for apparel that looks vintage? like 1920s to the 1950s? i like the idea of vintage patterns but i wouldnt want to cut up a real vintage pattern.

Have you tried looking under costumes in Simplicity and so on - they quite often have vintage looking things - I'm sure I've seen a flapper in there and the 50's big full skirts and so on. It depends how accurate you want them to be. "The shakespeare in love" type of dress looks great but is made with different construction techniques than the original garments and so would not fool a historian. Fab for dressing up though!

Just checked out simplicity and it seems that I have remembered wrong or they have changed their lines. Buterick and McCalls both do a '50's rock and roll type number but no 20's stuff.

There is a huge range at http://www.longago.com/

I have a fab vintage hankerchief hem, tiny buttons all the way up the back dress in fushia, lime green and black, that I just cannot place in time! I bought it in the mid 70's in a charity shop and we thought it was 30's but it doesn't seem to fit any catagories

If you have real vintage patterns, you could trace them so you wouldn't have to cut them up.
I found some from the 50's and 60's at a garage sale recently.

Vogue has a line called "vintage vogue". They look like mostly 40's.

The patterns seem to start in the 1950s and go forward, but you might be able to find something!

The first link is an individual pattern company that specializes in vintage patterns of all kinds....the second is a link to many vintage pattern sources. I found these when I was looking for a tux and tail pattern for a drum major last year. Have fun!!!!

Hi

This has been a great thread to follow. Loved checking out the web sites you all recommended. It got me thinking when I saw some of the older patterns, so I asked my Mum if she had any of her old patterns around. My Mum has not sewn in years now...and these would be patterns for dresses she made herself, and me a copy...when I was small...back in the 60's.

She does...and she is bringing them with her from England, when we meet in New York City in November!! I can't wait...not only to see her (its been 2 years) but also to check out the patterns...talk about going down memory lane!!

Cheers
Anne
