I'm making some curtains and have been told to use blackout lining. Will this really make a difference in the amount of light that is blocked out? It seems a medium weight muslin would do the same wouldn't it? |

Hi! I sew drapes professionally. Yes, blackout lining makes a big difference in how much light, heat, and sound comes through. If you use a good quality DRAPERY lining like Sonata Sateen or even Roc lon, it is not absolutely necessary to use the blackout. Depends on the look you want. Do always please use lining! It makes your curtains last much longer and hang better as it absorbs some of the UV rays that contribute to sun rot and fading. Blackout comes in varying degrees of dimness factor from "dimout" which is cotton with a single pass coating of acrylic on the back, to true full blackout which has multiple passes of coating, one of them dark. If your drapes are silk, at least use one of the medium blackouts or regular lining and add a flannerl interlining. Hope this helps! |

Hi Ladyborg. I'm curious how you came up with your username, as it's one I used for a while. I was having fun with a bunch of women who called themselves Ladybugs, combined with the idea of the Borg from Star Trek. |

speak for yourself, paleface. Old trekkies never die, they simply learn Klingon. My cat was named after a Cardasian - bad sign. love and kisses, Jan

You guys are great! Looks like I found sewing and trekkie friends! Terrific! I named one of our parakeets Spock! Beat that! Magot had a good idea, we should name ourselves!!!!!!! I'll take Ladyborg7of9 All you Trekkies out there feel free to share your favorite sites here as well. I'm always looking for good ones. Have you seen the Sev-Trek cartoons?: http://cartoons.sev.com.au/Sev-Space/Sev-Trek/ What are your favorite series? Original, Next Generation, Deep Space 9, etc????? Kirk is the ultimate captain, isn't he?!? None of this discussion with "sentient beings" crap. Just shoot first and ask questions later! Stitch, I bet YOU'RE the one always taking Ladyborg when I sign up for sites. LOL! |

If we are going to have a trekkie gossip it should be in "take a break" I suppose rather than General sewing Forum. See you there.
