Seems it's time to ask this again. What is the last thing you finished? What are you working on now? What is next in line? I just finished a shirt. Plain, with princess seams. It's tiny red and white checks but not like gingham. Hey Mary -- it's smaller than the one I made before it. And I used some pastels made for fabric to put a large flower on a stem on one side and several smaller ones without stems on the other side. They look like a kid drew them on with crayons. I'm working on a shawl. An olive green and I'm going to stamp a bunch of ladies heads with cool hats all over it. They are all 1920s and 1930s style. I have eight of them in two sizes and usually use them to make labels for my garments. I'm also making a purse out of some very expensive silk velvet and brocade patchwork. Then I'm going to make my husband some shorts. Ok youse guys -- whatca makin? Dorothy |

I'm having fun making doll clothes for my friend's dd. I had to draft my own pattern for a doll who came in her birthday suit. So far she has a pink dress with sequins and beads, a coordinating fleece jacket, blue with sun, moon and stars, a green corduroy jumper with white blouse, a denim with glitter skirt and jacket, and a hand knit sweater. I'm halfway through ultrasuede shoes, never doing those again! It's such a great way to use up scraps and old clothes with worn spots and lots of good parts. The last thing I made was a blue flower print sundress this summer. I've been crocheting bags and trying to finish up some UFO's. |

Sewhappie We should start a use our stash support thread. That is what I wanna do between now and Christmas. I have 3 rubber maid trunks(28 U.S. Gal size) 5 other large rubbermaid containers (10-15 U.S Gal Size) full of fabric, one large rubbermaid containers full of scraps, 5 drawers full of Fq's and numerous other pieces that are not fitting anywhere. My husband is threatening a coup if I don't do something soon. Right now I am basically doing odds and ends. This morning I made my dd a fabric pouch for her sun glasses. Yesterday I hemmed some pants for a friend with vertically challenged children. My big project right now is a crazy quilt using my scraps. I also need to do a skating dress for my dd . Skating starts October 1 so I guess that is my deadline (not that it will be done by then.) and I want to make blinds for my living room but hey we don't have a whole lot of light between now and next spring so those can probably wait . I'm working on Scottish garb for the Highlands Games on October 2nd! So far I've finished my skirt, underskirt, wrap, and a matching drawstring purse, cut a muslin for my bodice, and laid out DH's kilt. We still can't decide if he's going to wear a great kilt or modern-style, though. Today I hope to make my blouse, but my older sister from California drove in on a whim so I'm getting absolutely nothing done, and she's generally driving me up the wall. AUGH!!! |

Great minds think alike. I just started organizing my stash too. It seems like we always have a contest starting in October and ending just before Christmas. We should start organinzing it now. Figure out who is going to keep tally and all. As for what I am working on. I just finished a shirt and tie for my oldest boy. Next on the agenda is some shorts and model rocket parachutes for my hubby. Then it is on to something for my oldest daughter's birthday. Not sure what I am gonna make her yet. She is becoming a young lady now and won't wear stuff just 'cause I made it. Now it has to "look good" too. Gina

I just made a pillow for my son to give his friend for his birthday. It has a race car embroidered on one side, and a Yankees print on the other. My son told me last night "mom, I'm going to a birthday party tomorrow and I don't have anything to give him!" So I whipped it up in an hour or so. I'm working on a baby quilt for a shower. I'm embroidering baby animals on flannel squares. I'm going to put them together with another color flannel sashing, and back it with fleece with no batting. I have SCADS of things ready to go and things that have been started for a long time but not finished. I need to make a pact that I will complete my UFO's before they send me into outer space! Hey, if you are home alone, it's your house, soooooooooooo. If you feel like walking around in PJ's and a purse, you go right ahead. No one will be there to see you. Who knows you just might start a new fashion trend!!!!!!! |

All My Scissors Are Dull, So I Can't Cut Out Anything New Until I Get The Scissors Sharpener I Ordered. Fortunately I Have A Stack Of Ufo's Next To The Serger-------a Pair Of Turquoise Pique Pants, A Pair Of Gray Twill Pants, And A Red Plush Turtleneck I Cut Out. So I Figure The Sharpener Will Come At The Same Time I've Finished Off All My Ufo's. After That I'm Going To Test A Pattern For 2-piece Pants For Jammies And Scruffies, And Also Cut Out A Pants Suit Of Liz Claiborne Black Material, Which I Will Trim With Very Pale Shell Pink Cotton Brocade Collars And Cuffs. After That There Are Lots Of Things I Want To Make! Tote Bags To Use Up Scraps, And Lots Of Other Things! |

I have 2 Halloween Costumes to make. My dd 7 wants to be a pirate. I have that cut out and ready to sew. My dd 5 wants to be a woodland fairy. I have the material prewashed and ready to cut. I am also working on a soccer baby quilt in the colors of the Mexican flag- red, white, and green. The back will be a play mat with all the little roads and buildings for our friend's baby to play on when he is bigger. I am really excited about this one. Its been awhile since I have had the chance to make a quilt. Last things I have sewn are school shorts and capris for my two youngest dds. LOTS of them! lol! So I've been on a sewing hiatus. Also, I just started back to college (after a 15 year break-lol ie: marriage and getting 3 children raised and the youngest to kindergarden this year)... so I haven't had quite as much time to sew. HOMEWORK!!! lol! My dh bought me an early birthday present. A sewing machine I have been lusting after for the past 6+ months. It is a Kenmore 19365---and the very last one we could find within 100 miles-lol! I just started playing with it yesterday, and as he would say, it is SWEET!!!! So I can't wait to start sewing. Happy sewing everyone! Jen in CA |

And here I've been shlepping my scissors to get sharpened every year. Is this a "tried and true" or "just trying it out" type of sharpener? IOW, do other sewists use one? Come to think of it, my knife sharpener is wonderful -- no reason why a scissors sharpener shouldn't be as helpful. So, tell us what it is and how well it works -- BEFORE you sew up all those projects, pretty please! nancy |

OK-------to Nancy and others! trying again here------ I ordered the Scissorpro from allbrands.com. It hasn't arrived yet but I am hoping for the best because the scissorsgrinder comes to Joanne's here only 4 times a year. When I went in the last time they informed me he had come and gone, and meanwhile I have several pairs of very dull sewing shears here. Nothing can be cut out until something gets done about those dull blades! Meanwhile, the city is almost an hour away from here! Oh, pain, sob, choke! When I've tried this out I will post my experience on this thread. Thanks for reading my post! |

Well, this past weekend, I recovered 4 box cushions (2 more to go) and started cutting the blocks for a baby (crib size) flannel rag quilt. I need to get that done for a baby shower on October 9th. Other projects that I'm currently working on is sewing some screen for the hatches on our sailboat, to keep those darn bugs out! In the last month, I did a few small projects to practice with my new serger. I made several "cooley" ties and some rice bags for my daughter in college. I also knit, so I've been working on two projects while watching TV at night. I'm working on a fashion scarf for my oldest daughter with the new funky eyelash yarns. And I've also been knitting the American flag. I started this one the day after Sept. 11th. I work on it, when I can. It is a big project. Other projects planned are a fleece blanket (folds into a pillow) and a denim/fleece queen size quilt for our new truck camper. Happy Sewing, Liz Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

Oh, joy, oh rapture! The scissorpro came from allbrands.com this afternoon! I got out nearly all the scissors in the house and started to grind away. I sharpened a total of 14 pairs of scissors. I tested all of them on cloth before starting and began with the dullest and most horrible pair. It's just wonderful! 12 out of my 14 pair are now fit to cut accurately on fabric. Two pairs, very cheap ones, are ok to cut paper now so they will go into the kitchen. I also oiled the hinges of all the scissors and shears. The brands I sharpened were Marks, Ikea, Fiskars, and Singer, and they all sharpened up fine! The Fiskars Softouch had to be taken apart before sharpening, but they're like new again! I tried to sharpen all of these before on a sharpening stone, and failed totally. The old "household hints" methods of cutting sandpaper or cutting on a coke bottle were also total failures, but this machine really works. I figure this machine has paid for itself already today. If you are inclined to try this, I have the following observations: 1. I used the coarse side----it seemed much more effective than the fine side. 2. Don't put your finger anywhere near that sharpened blade, even though the instructions tell you how. Snip the scissors in the air and you can hear and feel the burr on the blade as it's being snipped off. Test the scissors on cloth before and after sharpening to see if the blades are sharp all the way down to the tip. The test of the blade is how well it cuts the materials you want to cut, so that's how to test them. I fished some scraps out of the wastebasket to use as testing materials. I've had a few urgent things to take care of, so I haven't had much time to sew. But I've almost finished that red plush turtleneck, so look out fabric stash! You are not long for this world! |
