Is alova a kind of fabric or is it a brand of fabric? If it IS a fabric, is it machine washable? I bought some fabric today and I'm not really sure what it is, just that I liked it for some pillows I am making. This was my first shopping experience for fabric and I really didn't know what I was doing.

Was there a label on the end of the bolt? If so it would include fiber content and cleaning instructions. Your best bet is to go back to the store and ask the sales staff what they know about it.

I just did a search and found it is a 100% polyester suede. It probably has a knit backing and should be treated like a knit, using a needle for knits and either serging or stitch with a long, narrow zig zag.

Did you buy it at Joanns? This sounds like one of their "Suede like" fabrics. If this is what it is. I believe you can wash it on cold/warm and dry it slightly in the dryer.
I personally wash it on cold delicate and hang it up to dry, then fluff it on air in the dryer.
So much Fabric, so little time.

Thanks everyone for your responses. The fabric does look like suede and I did buy it at Joann's. I'm glad it is machine washable.

I'm not sure the origin of 'Alova', but it's used liberally by fabric traders to describe sueded polyester and poly/velvets. It's used mostly for upholstry, and small stuffed animals. Check you pattern for stretch requirements -- most of the alova I have seen has very little stretch.
