I have bought some really cute polar fleece to make into hats for shoeboxes (operation Christmas Child). I have never sewn with fleece before - are there any special things I should know, like do you need a stretchy stitch or what. Do I tack or pin? How big a seam allowance do I need? ( I just have an ordinary sewing machine - no serger) I have looked at several hats and the patterns are very simple - mostly rectangles! So they shouldn't take long to make in theory. Come on people, give me your best hints and tips, please. love and kisses, Jan

Magot, If you don't have any of the fleece books, you do have to approach it like most knits. Use a small to med size zig-zag for stretch and poly thread (don't wind too tight on bobbin). I often have to use a walking foot since my machine is finicky on feeding fleece which mandates a 5/8' SA -- more for the foot to grab onto. Hems can be done w a double needle or be bound w swimsuit-type lycra strips. Other than those hints, it's mainly a tension and pressure fiddling around thing. have fun!!! nancy |

I made a bunting for my baby girl a couple years ago, my first fleece project. I followed my manual's instructions to the letter - let up on presser foot pressure, used a stretch needle - and it worked just fine. As with many projects if you take your time setting things up it goes much better. Good luck! What a sweet project to work on. see the mundane life of a housewife.

Magot, polar fleece does not ravel, so you do not have to finish the raw edges if you don't want to..If making scarves or ponchos , I just cut a fringe edge on the bottom .. Works great.. Sew With Love

Magot, Here is a good link on some tips for sewing with fleece. They also have some free patterns. http://www.fabriclandwest.com/Fleece_Country/fleece_tips.htm I love sewing with fleece. I have made several fleece vests, jackets, blankets, hats, scarfs, mittens. I also made a skirt and jacket for the office with fleece. I think that fleece is one of the easiest fabrics to sew with. I never pin, no need to iron, it sews up very easy. Enjoy! Liz Happy sewing/quilting/crafting

Thanks ladies for all the hints and tips. Minicrafter, you are so right - that fluff gets everywhere! I have made 10 hats out of my 1m of fabric with tassels, fringes , ears and all sorts of knots tied in them and have had great fun. I must do this more often! Blackie, some friends from church have been gathering things for shoeboxes all year - we probably have enough for 40 or so boxes to send off for Christmas! woohoo! love and kisses, Jan
