Hi everyone, My SIL2b is making my wedding dress for me and I would like beading on the bodice. She has told me that beads would cost around $180 (Australian) but I am sure I can do better than that on the net - I love ebay! What I don't know is what sort of beads should I get? I am pretty sure I want Swarovski crystals but don't know what size, styles etc is normal. Has anyone here used them? SIL2b is rather stressed as the wedding is in 2 months and she hasn't yet started (and works full-time, making her mum's outfit plus her own) so I want help by sourcing them for her as a surprise. Please please give me some advice....!?!?!? (Thanks!) |

M&J Trim offers swarovski crystals and beads through their website: http://www.mjtrim.com/index.aspx I've never ordered from them, but it seems that they have a nice variety of trims available. |

Hi, I found very good online store for Swarovski Crystals (http://www.kgottfriedinc.com/). Bigger sizes and different shapes may be available. |

TRUST me when I say that it will take a lot longer to bead the dress than to make it...I spend roughly 2 weeks beading my DD's (non) wedding dress' train and another weeks to bead the whole dress. It took a day to make it.

Swarovski is expensive, and I've never seen them discounted. (Like Bose radios here in the States)I don't know how much beading or crystal ornamentation you want. I have a package of Swarovski flat back crystals right here though, and I can tell you this much: ten gross of ss16 crystals will cover about 36 square inches, if they are closely placed. The cost was about $60-85 US a ten-gross package about four years ago. Hot fix stones are substantially higher, so I think her estimate is spot-on. The best price I got, and the most variety, was from Rhinestonz in New Zealand. In addition to Swarovski, which are Austrian, there are also Czech and Korean crystals. Beware if a price on Ebay is substantially lower - you likely won't be getting Swarovski. If they are called "stones" and come only ss20 or bigger, those are acrylic (plastic). That being said, I have three sheets in front of me. One is Swarovski, one Czech, (eight cut instead of Swarovski's twelve) and glass eight-cut. Could I tell the difference? If I was looking at these every day, yup. But just pulling them out of the file cabinet to check...not so sure. And you'd likely be using Crystal or crystal ab (aurora borealis) The Swarovski are a little sparklier - but twelve facets instead of eight will do that. Beading will take a long time. Flat back stones, either hot fix or glue on, both go rather quickly. I am aware of one seamstress who claims she can glue on 3-4 gross an hour. She's very experienced, I suspect it's possible. |

The advantage to the hot fix is that you don't have any wet glue on the back to get all over and you don't have any prongs. The disadvantage is clearly in the cost.
