After smocking is complete, do you remove the pleating threads or leave them?

After you are done with your smocking. Block it,to the size you will need, not sure what you are making. Then, remove all your pleating threads except fot the holding row. You will need the holding row for construction.

I am glad I can help. When I teach the beginning basics of smocking,I have the students make a Christmas ornament. You can use all the basic stitches, and have a useful product when you are done. Also the bonnet, that you can see on my site is great for beginners, its just a straight peice of fabric, and again you can learn all the basic smocking stitches.

Hi sewingnonie,
It's me the pest. I got a instruction sheet for my ornament. I will be using smocking dots to start this. Any words of wisdom before I start. 6 X 40 in. peice of fabric is what I need to pleat. I hope my dots are that long. I'd hate have to piece them together and keep them straight. I'd welcome any advice.

Hi Holly Berry, you are not a pest at all.I use a pleater, because dots are a pain. You might want to think about getting a pleater, because smocking is addictive.
Some tips, cut your thread about four inches longer then the fabric, when all the pleating is done, tie the threads on one end. Take two threads and tie together,do not use a square knot because they can come loose. After tying one end, slide the pleats down toward the knots, accordian style. When you have the desired measurments, hold the top and bottom of you fabric and give a tug, snapping the pleats in place, you might end up with a pleat or two that has a bubble, just give it a little tug or run your needle down the pleat.Tie the other end, now, take it to your ironing board, give it a shot of spray startch, and a good shot of steam, don't touch your iron to the pleats.Let it dry and start smocking.
Hope this helps,
